Paramedics’ role in healthcare delivery in short-term police custody in Queensland, Australia
Provision of healthcare within short-term custody settings such as police watch-houses presents a complex public health challenge. This area has received limited attention in the literature, particularly the viewpoints of paramedics, who are a key link in the chain of healthcare. This study aimed to describe paramedics’ decision-making practices and procedures regarding the transport of patients from the watch-house to the emergency department. A…
The case for broader copulas
Discovering, comparing, and contrasting natural kinds is critical for scientific progress. It should be the goal of linguistic inquiry to seek out natural kinds within and between languages. Unfortunately, the most common definition of a copula is consistently inadequate for categorizing and comparing the data in cross-linguistic research on this topic. The categories of pseudo-copula and semi-copula have been offered to account for constructions…
Epidemics And Disability
This essay argues that considering disability and disability history needs to be part of any history of epidemics. Recent scholarship has shown the many intersections of disability history and history of medicine. This essay argues that disability plays many roles in an epidemic from establishing pre-existing conditions, to affecting the acute phase of the disease, to creating lingering disabilities in the long aftermath. Histories of epidemics t…

Kerry Highley, Dancing in My Dreams
Kerry Highley’s Dancing in My Dreams is a history of the polio epidemics from the Australian perspective. She focuses her study on the epidemic decades from the 1930s to the early 1960s, and she discusses both the experience of having polio and the work of Australian physicians and scientists who contributed to the effort to understand the disease and to develop a vaccine. Highley also takes a close look at the career of Sister Elizabeth Kenny, t…
The Limits of Public Health Reform in Urban America
Basil O'Connor, the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis and the Reorganization of Polio Research in the United States, 1935–41
The costs associated with polio research in the late 1920s were high, while sources for research funding remained scarce. This began to change in the early 1930s with the creation of three private philanthropies that would form the basis of a system to fund polio research adequately: the International Committee for the Study of Infantile Paralysis (1928), The President's Birthday Ball Commission (1934), and the National Foundation for Infantile P…

State incentives for innovation, star scientists and jobs
Memorials of Edinburgh in the Olden Time
Born in Edinburgh, Daniel Wilson (1816–92) initially pursued an artistic career and spent time in Turner's studio. However, in 1846 he became a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and devoted the rest of his life to archaeology, anthropology and university administration. He was active in the Society's attempts to save historic buildings in Edinburgh, and the city's built environment was the subject of this two-volume 1848 work, whic…
Prehistoric Annals of Scotland
Born in Edinburgh, Daniel Wilson (1816–92) planned on becoming a painter and spent time working in Turner's studio. But in 1842 he became secretary of the Society of Antiquaries in Scotland and devoted the rest of his life to archaeology, anthropology and university administration. This two-volume work, first published in 1851, brought him to immediate academic attention. Carrying out pioneering work of scientific archaeology, Wilson brought the …

We assess the importance of interpersonal income comparisons using data on suicide deaths. We examine whether suicide risk is related to others' income, holding own income and other individual and environmental factors fixed. We estimate models of the suicide hazard using two independent data sets: the National Longitudinal Mortality Study and the National Center for Health Statistics' Multiple Cause of Death Files combined with the 5% Public Use…

Prehistoric Man
The Scottish archaeologist and anthropologist Daniel Wilson (1816–92) spent the latter part of his life in Canada. Published in 1862, this is a seminal work in the study of early man in which Wilson utilises studies of native tribes 'still seen there in a condition which seems to reproduce some of the most familiar phases ascribed to the infancy of the unhistoric world'. He believed that civilisations initially developed in mild climates and judg…
The Right Hand
Throughout history, left-handedness has been viewed as being the mark of the devil, as evidence of mental retardation or neurosis, as showing a predisposition to criminality, or as being linked to every perceived social ill. Even into the nineteenth century, many scientists were of the opinion that left-handedness was the sign of a sinister personality. An eminent ethnologist and one of the first scientific archaeologists, Daniel Wilson (1816–92)…

IT and Beyond
This article explores the relationship between capital composition and productivity using a unique, detailed dataset on firm investment in the United States in the late 1990s. I develop a methodology for estimating the separate effects of multiple capital types in a production function framework. I back out the implied marginal products of each capital type and compare these with rental price data. I find that although most capital types earned n…
Beggar Thy Neighbor? The In-State, Out-of-State, and Aggregate Effects of R&D Tax Credits
The proliferation of R&D tax incentives among U.S. states in recent decades raises two questions: (i) Are these tax incentives effective in increasing in-state R&D? (ii) How much of any increase is due to R&D being drawn away from other states? This paper answers (i) “yes” and (ii) “nearly all.” The paper estimates an augmented R&D factor demand model using state panel data from 1981 to 2004. I estimate that the long-run elasticity of in-state R&…

No Defectives Need Apply
For many American schoolchildren in the twentieth century, the powerful words of the poem “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus affixed to the base of the Statue of Liberty represented America's generosity in opening its door to all kinds of immigrants seeking refuge and a better future in the United States. I and many others in grade school memorized the hopeful words (1): Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,…
Teaching Disability History
Disability is a part of all our lives. We may have a disability ourselves, or know a family member or friend with a disability. Many of us have older relatives who rely on hearing aids or are disabled by arthritis. We know others who are disabled by automobile, workplace, or household accidents. We know veterans wounded during war. And all of us who teach have taught students with cognitive or physical disabilities. When we start to look, disabil…

Bronze Matrix with Hebrew Inscription
Dr. Daniel Wilson presented the matrix of a round seal, whose inscription bore striking resemblances to those displayed in the engravings of a vol of the Gentlemen's Magazine from June 1787. The figure is a turbaned head, and the words in Hebrew letters. Dr. Wilson then relayed the opinions of several scholars on the reading of the inscription. Beyond the mention of a Solomon son of Isaac, the experts can find few specifics to agree on
