The Sentient Cell: The Cellular Foundations of Consciousness
This volume is the natural follow-up to Arthur Reber’s 2019 book, The First Minds: Caterpillars, ‘Karyotes, and Consciousness (TFM). In that earlier work, the Cellular Basis of Consciousness (CBC) theory was developed based on a number of earlier efforts published in a variety of journals between 1997 and 2019 as well as in talks, colloquia, and presentations at conferences. The core proposition in TFM was that life and mind are co-terminous. All…
Profile Analysis and Risk Assessment: Identifying Distinct Patterns of Risks and Needs
The goal of this study was to identify distinct and meaningful profiles of the seven criminogenic risk and need domains included on the Ohio Youth Assessment System—Disposition Tool (OYAS-DIS). This goal was accomplished by conducting a latent profile analysis (LPA) on a sample of 4,383 formally processed justice-involved youth assessed by the OYAS-DIS. The LPA determined there were six distinct profiles: (1) Low risk and need, (2) Low/moderate r…

Sex work, discrimination, drug use and violence: A pattern for HIV risk among transgender sex workers compared to MSM sex workers and other MSM in Guatemala
The risk of HIV infection is higher among transgender women and cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) compared to the general population due in part to social and contextual factors. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and association of alcohol and drug abuse, discrimination and violence among transgender sex workers compared to cisgender male sex workers and cisgender men who had not received money for sex in Guatemala City. In 201…

Ethnicity, Islam, and Pakistani Public Opinion toward the Pakistani Taliban
This article argues that an Islamist militant group with a relatively homogenous ethnic make-up is more likely to be supported by those of the same ethnicity even if the group makes no reference to and even downplays the importance of ethnicity. Using survey data from an original survey carried out in Pakistan in 2013, with 7,656 respondents, this hypothesis is tested in a multiple regression analysis of support for the Pakistani Taliban. The res…
Pakistani Political Communication and Public Opinion on US Drone Attacks
Conventional wisdom holds that Pakistanis are overwhelmingly opposed to American drone strikes in their country’s tribal areas and that this opposition is driven by mass media coverage of the loss of life and property the strikes purportedly cause. Using an approach based in the literature in political communication and public opinion, we argue this conventional wisdom is largely inaccurate. Instead, we contend that awareness of drone strikes wil…

The Birth and Death of a Three-Party System: Scotland in the Seventies
In the general election of October 1974 the Scottish National Party gained 30·4 per cent of the vote in Scotland. This result and the build-up to it in the previous two elections, seemed to indicate a new pattern for Scottish voting. British and American writers had drawn attention to the decline of partisanship as a basis for voting. In Britain, the class basis of this partisanship had been dominant but now appeared to recede. Growing support fo…
Improved Mortality among U.S. Blacks, 1968–1978: The Role of Antiracist Struggle
A marked improvement in health status for black adults took place over the last decade in the United States. Life expectancy for black men increased 4.6 years between 1968 and 1978, while for black women the increase was 5.7 years. Death rates for the age group 35–74 decreased approximately 25 percent for blacks over the same period. The largest contribution to this improvement was made by cardiovascular diseases (coronary heart disease and strok…
Canada's TV World is US-made
At the very time the government cracks down on foreign news magazines, and the CRTC and the CBC work busily to purge Canadian broadcasting of foreign commercials and entertainment programs, there is a curious lack of concern about the foreign filters through which Canadians receive their television coverage of world affairs. This lack of concern about the foreign newsfilm which is so prevalent on Canadian television is puzzling especially in ligh…

(Below are few excerpts from a Bibliographic Essay by William Miller which totalled 33 double-spaced typed pages when submitted to the University of Toronto's Faculty of Library Science under the title, "Television Broadcasting of News in Canada, Great Britain, and the United States." Other excerpts may be printed in future issues. The article that follows this excerpt, "Canadian TV Coverage of World Events" is not part of the essay, it was writt…

Graphics Variables and Reliability and Level of Essay Grades
It has long been known that graphics variables, independent of the actual quality of themes and essays, have influenced the reliability of essay grading. The quality of handwriting was found to influence essay grades forty years ago (James, 1927; Sheppard, 1929). Composition errors have been found to significantly influence grades given essays even when raters were instructed to grade on content only (Scannell and Marshall, 1966; Marshall, 1967).…

American Historians and the Business Elite
One might have supposed that historians, largely occupied as they have been with the activities of ruling classes, would have been among the first to study systematically the problem of the recruitment and tenure of elites. This problem is an especially interesting one in a country such as the United States which has had no official caste systems and no legally established hereditary hierarchies. Yet most American historians have shied away from …

The Report of New Jersey's Constitutional Commission
The Report of the Commission on Revision of the New Jersey Constitution (Trenton: May, 1942, 59 pp.), as conditioned by the peculiarities of the state's governmental environment, is conventional in philosophy but unique in many particulars. It recommends a new state constitution, which is set forth in full—a proposed constitution relatively short, and showing some rigidity in legislative organization and procedure, but ample flexibility in its ex…

The Finlay Library
The study of mediaeval, Turkish and modern Greek history now attracts considerable attention in Athens. Important works upon these periods have been recently published by Greek scholars; lectures upon Byzantine history in particular are crowded not merely by students, but also by the general public, and several newspapers make a special feature of articles by specialists on social life in the reign of Otho. In these circumstances it is fortunate …

The following article, sent by Finlay to The Times on October 3, 1867, and corrected in proof and returned by him on September 5, 1868, was never published, but is preserved, like the similarly unpublished article on the same subject for Blackwood's Magazine , in both the corrected proof and a copy of the original manuscript in the Finlay Library. The longest of all his newspaper articles, it contains his view of the ‘great’ Cretan insurrection o…
