Stories Communities Tell: How Deliberative Practitioners Can Work with Community Narratives
How do past experiences of public engagement shape the way communities view the role of public input today? In this article, we examine the case of a community in a mid-Atlantic college town whose civic history is shaped by stories of skepticism and hope regarding past experiences of public decision-making. We use methods of interpretive analysis to surface their stories—the tensions, the plot, the actors, and complicating events—to understand ho…
Increasing the dose of television advertising in a national antismoking media campaign: Results from a randomised field trial
The US 2013 Tips antismoking media campaign compared standard and higher doses by randomisation of local media markets. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of a higher dose for engaging non-smokers and further increasing quit attempts among smokers, especially African-Americans
Low-income housing in high-amenity areas: Long-run effects on residential development
Centre-left governments from the 1940s into the 1970s developed several large areas in the urban fringe of Dunedin, New Zealand, for low-density, mostly single-family public rental housing. The public housing in these areas is now accessible, well-endowed with natural amenities, and allocated to very low-income households. Analysis of the spatial variation in natural amenities with that of household incomes and house characteristics suggests larg…

Ps: Political Science and Politics Reviewers, 2011
In 2011, PS: Political Science and Politics published articles covering a vast range of topics. The journal's commitment to publishing articles on pedagogy and the profession, as well as exemplary topical scholarship on a spectrum of issues, call for an equally broad stable of reviewers. PS cannot publish such diverse work without the outstanding work (and openmindedness) of our peer reviewers. The peer-review process relies on the professionalis…

Organized Interests and Campaign Professionals: Insights from the American States
Scholars have grown increasingly aware of the important role campaign consultants and public relations firms play in the electoral process. We have learned a great deal about these "permanent campaigns." However, there is still much we do not know. This is particularly true relative to their use by organized interests and their presence in state politics. Using a large-scale mail survey of over 400 interest groups in three states, we investigated…

Pinning a Face on the Electoral College: A Survey of the Class of 2000
The 2000 presidential election was an historic election. Many Americans revisited that institution given its perfunctory three paragraphs in their high school civics texts—the Electoral College. The closeness of the election and the ambiguity of electoral versus popular votes made many question how presidents are chosen. The realization that citizens vote not for candidates, but for electors further complicated understanding. Although many expert…
Re-Writing the French Revolutionary Tradition: Liberal Opposition and the Fall of the Bourbon Monarchy
This book examines the politics of the French Revolutionary tradition during the Bourbon Restoration and early July Monarchy. Robert Alexander argues that political change was achieved by legal grassroots organization and persuasion - rather than by the revolutionary tradition of conspiracy and armed insurrection. Moreover, political struggle was not confined to the elite, as common material values linked the electorate to those deprived of the p…
The Hero as Houdini: Napoleon and 19th-century Bonapartism
This article discusses the relation between 19th-century Bonapartism and the reputation of Napoleon I. The author argues that while Bonapartism evolved according to circumstance, ultimately its definition contracted in terms of doctrine and place in the political spectrum. In contrast, the many images that composed Napoleon's reputation continued to allow divergent groups to see in Napoleon what they wanted to see and claim part of his historical…
A Tale of Two Electorates: Generational Replacement and the Decline of Voting in Presidential Elections
This article revisits the question of voter turnout in American presidential elections from the perspective of political generations. We extend previous analyses by examining the entire period between 1952 and 1966 by further specifying the turnout model and, most important, by incorporating a generational component. We hypothesize that the direct effect of membership in the cohort born prior to 1932 is to increase voter turnout and the indirect …

A Great Queen on the Sphinx Piers at Alaca Hüyük
Since the first European visited Alaca Hüyük 150 years ago the site has been noted for its gateway dating from the Hittite empire, fourteenth and thirteenth centuries B.C. Within a few decades of the discovery, excavations revealed a large number of sculptured orthostats flanking the entry, but the piers with sphinx protomes have always been above ground and have given the entrance its name, the Sphinx Gate. Nineteenth-century travellers noted on…

The Fédérés of Dijon in 1815
When Napoleon returned from exile on the island of Elba, he immediately set about gathering the support that he hoped would re-establish him as ruler of France. No sooner had he disembarked at Antibes on 1 March 1815 than he began issuing proclamations in which he portrayed himself as the leading soldier of the Republic and a man of the Revolution. His appeals found a welcome response in the French populace that astonished his opponents and perha…

Participatory Art and Body Sculptures with Mirrors
Since antiquity many artists have been fascinated by the play of reflections from mirrors. They reacted in various ways to the illusions that are created by these inanimate objects so easily, yet mysteriously. Velasquez was one who depicted reflections in his paintings, for example in his 'Venus and Cupid' and in 'Las Meninas'. For him mirrors were a means to unlimited expansion of the visual field. Venus, the goddess of love, has often been repr…
A Hittite Cylinder Seal in the Fitzwilliam Museum
The Hittite cylinder seal discussed here (Figs. 1–4) was purchased by Sir Max Mallowan in the 'thirties while he was working in northern Syria. In the division of his collections it was allotted to the Fitzwilliam Museum, in Cambridge, which received it in 1966. Extensive use has severely worn the engraved surface, and even the two large old chips have been smoothed over. Despite the loss of all details, such as facial features, each element of t…

The Second Inscription on Mount Sipylus
The two authors of this brief note together made a tour of Hittite monuments in Turkey in the summer of 1978. RLA arrived in İzmir from abroad a few days earlier than HGG, who was detained in İstanbul by other obligations. While waiting for him, RLA revisited the Karabel and Mt. Sipylus and thus was the first of us to notice the inscription. Since it had not been mentioned in recent years and neither of us had seen it on previous visits to the si…
