  • Phillis Wheatley

William Harris, Will Harris•ARTICLE•African American Review•2015

This essay contends that Phillis Wheatley's work can be understood best by interpreting her work from an African Muslim rather than a Christian standpoint (as over two hundred years of Western criticism has done). To support this view, the article employs African Muslim slave demographics from the Americas, African Muslim slave statements and narratives, colonial historical documents, Wheatley's biographical material, her poems, and Qur'anic refe…

  • Resistance and

William Harris, Will Harris•ARTICLE•African American Review•2014

Resistance and: Lincoln Pietà and: Return Will Harris (bio) Resistance Birds fall from flight, strike earth in tiny explosions of snow. From the doorstep of his house beyond town he hears a wild dog howl down the blizzard. Two days later, it is silent. For seven mornings after he pushes himself against fever and pleurisy, digs daily paths through knee-deep snow, cuts wind with ax to strike wood. He chugs with each blow. When he spits, the phlegm …

  • Early Black Women Playwrights and the Dual Liberation Motif

William Harris, Will Harris•ARTICLE•African American Review•1994•Cited by: 1

In the introduction to the section of his Black Theater USA anthology entitled Early Plays by Black Women, James V. Hatch recalls Eldridge Cleaver's observation about the myth of the black woman. [the white man] turned the black woman into a self-reliant Amazon and deposited her in his kitchen--that's the secret of Aunt Jemima's bandana. Question: Do these women playwrights paint true portraits of black women? (136) Hatch may mute the explosive p…

  • The topology of hair streams and whorls in man, with an observation on their relationship to epidermal ridge patterns

    Open Access•G H Findlay, Will Harris et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1977•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Hair slope, whorl, cross and field formation is expressible in a topological form. The mathematical description required suggests an origin for the patterns in a growth process occurring in the upper dermis which determines the patterns of the hair slope. The formulae proposed by Euler, Poincaré and Ludwig are adopted as a descriptive method for the analysis of hair patterning resulting from hair slope. A unitary theory for hair streams and finge…
