Women's experiences of maternity care in high-income countries during the pandemic health system shock
Introduction: COVID-19 disrupted healthcare systems globally, particularly challenging maternity services which continued to be operated as an essential service. Reconfigurations were implemented to continue providing care in a safe manner and in line with infection control restrictions. Stakeholders' Experiences and Perspectives of Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in Maternal and Neonatal Clinical Trials
INTRODUCTION: While there is a growing emphasis on Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) within maternal and neonatal research, there is a lack of evidence on how PPI is currently implemented. The aim of this qualitative evidence synthesis was to gain insight into stakeholders' experiences and perspectives of PPI in maternal and neonatal trials. METHODS: CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Maternity and Infant Care (OVID) were s…
Collaboration as a Form of Institutional Critique
How do we move forward when the legality of teaching and learning about social justice research is called into question by the state? This article demonstrates the efficacy of collaboration as a form of institutional critique that made it possible to provide a comprehensive graduate education following the emergence of anti-DEI legislation in Florida. To teach and learn in a tumultuous legal landscape without sacrificing rigor, eliding DEI-orient…
Are Racial Groups Associated with Recurrence of Adult Protective Services
Little is known about the recurrence differences among diverse race/ethnic groups in the Adult Protective Services (APS). This mixed methods triangulation design study used data from both administrative databases and interview/focus groups with APS social workers to explore whether race/ethnic groups are associated with different recurrence in APS. The recurrence rate of APS was 21.4% in the sample of 4,426 clients in a county of California. Resu…
Pride in Death
Background: While all ageing populations share common concerns as they plan for old age and end of life, many older LGBTQIA+ people face significant additional challenges. Prevailing social, religious, and cultural attitudes which existed in Ireland until relatively recently, mean older LGBTQIA+ people grew up in society where asserting their identity often led to exclusion and isolation. Planning for end of life can make things easier but these …
Edith Wharton’s Position on the Real in A Motor-Flight Through France
Edith Wharton's A Motor-Flight Through France, is not merely a collection of essays about trips through France; it is also a philosophical and experimental work about the “real” that engages with Arthur Schopenhauer's epistemology. For Schopenhauer the “real” is the eternal essence of all matter (“wille”), which is revealed only through the act of aesthetic-sublime contemplation. Wharton draws readers' attention to the text-as-text and flings rea…
Caring for children in foster and kinship care during a pandemic
Through qualitative feedback from professionals in healthcare, mental health, and child welfare, this study explored the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health and well-being of children in the child welfare system. Positive outcomes and challenges related to the care of children in foster or kinship care in Texas during the COVID-19 pandemic are described. Themes identified included disparities in the child welfare system; utilization of …
Prevalence and Social-Ecological Correlates of Intimate Partner Violence in a Conflict Zone—Evidence From the 2015 Afghanistan Demographic and Health Survey
This study examined the prevalence and social-ecological correlates of male-to-female intimate partner violence (IPV) in Afghanistan. Using data from the 2015 Afghanistan Demographic and Health Survey, which included 20,793 currently married women, we found that the past-year prevalence of physical IPV was highest (46%), followed by emotional (34%) and sexual forms (6%). Results also showed that the risk of IPV in general was associated with an a…
Determinants of Health Care Services Utilization among First Generation Afghan Migrants in Istanbul
There is insufficient empirical evidence on the correlates of health care utilization of irregular migrants currently living in Turkey. The aim of this study was to identify individual level determinants associated with health service and medication use. One hundred and fifty-five Afghans completed surveys assessing service utilization including encounters with primary care physicians and outpatient specialists in addition to the use of prescript…
Gendered Sources of Distress and Resilience among Afghan Refugees in Northern California
Recent studies have emphasized the influence of resettlement factors on the mental health of refugees resettling in developed countries. However, little research has addressed gender differences in the nature and influence of resettlement stressors and sources of resilience. We address this gap in knowledge by investigating how gender moderates and mediates the influence of several sources of distress and resilience among 259 Afghan refugees resi…

Ethical and Effective Ethnographic Research Methods
SCHOLARLY STUDIES OF REFUGEES and other vulnerable populations carry special ethical concerns. In this invited case study of Afghan refugees in Fremont, California, I provide illustrations and recommendations of ethical research methods with refugees. I also compare and contrast some ethical issues in the U.S. with issues in Thailand. The qualitative, ethnographic methods I report here demonstrate how to conduct culturally sensitive investigation…
The Partners in Prevention Program
Based on the significant findings reported in the previous paper on academic progress and behavioral changes documented in annual evaluations, further study of the Partners in Prevention (PIP) Program was conducted. The PIP Program was compared to a school counseling approach through a quasi-experiment, which looked at how each approach influences change in academic achievement, the behaviors that present as barriers to academic success and the s…
The Partners in Prevention Program
This article reports on the further development of the task-centered model for difficulties in school performance. We used Bailey-Dempsey and Reid's (1996) application of Rothman and Thomas's (1994) design and development framework and annual evaluations of the Partners in Prevention (PIP) Program to refine the task-centered case management model. Data from four recent PIP evaluations suggests the significant improvement in academic achievement a…
Emmett Till's Ring
Emmett Till’s Ring Valerie Smith (bio) On July 13, 1945, Mamie Till received a telegram at her home in Argo, Illinois, notifying her that her estranged husband, Private Louis Till, had been killed in Italy.1 The Department of Defense subsequently sent her his personal effects, including a silver ring he had bought in Casablanca, engraved with his initials and a date, May 25, 1943. During the following ten years, their son, Emmett Till, would occa…
Neo-slave narratives
The critical context The institution of slavery in the United States was a site of unimaginable physical, emotional, and spiritual cruelty, justified by greed and racism, and sanctioned by religion, philosophy, and the law. Written into the nation's founding documents, its very existence betrayed the contradictions at the heart of national identity and consciousness. It is thus little wonder that it has compelled a rich, challenging, and demandin…

New Essays on Song of Solomon
New Essays on Song of Solomon
The essays collected in this volume, first published in 1995, are written by leading critics of Toni Morrison's work and exemplify the theoretical and cultural perspectives that have been brought to bear upon African American texts in general and upon Song of Solomon in particular. They reveal the complexities of a deceptively straightforward novel and spark renewed interest in what has proven a pivotal text by one of the most gifted authors this…

Reading the Intersection of Race and Gender in Narratives of Passing
Stories of racial passing have long captivated the attention of American viewers and readers.1 These accounts of characters who are legally black yet light-skinned enough to live as white have fascinated the American imagination for a variety of reasons. I suspect that they compel, at least in part, because they force readers and viewers to confront conflicts raised but inadequately explored in the classic texts within the genre. In this essay I …
