Out of Sync: Chronic Illness, Time, and Comics Memoir
Out of SyncChronic Illness, Time, and Comics Memoir Jared Gardner (bio) Time as we experience it does not hold up to close examination. Philosophers have known this for millennia—giving rise, for example, to the very different accounts of time offered by Parmenides and Heraclitus. For Parmenides, time is an illusion and only the now is real, while for Heraclitus, time is change and only change is real. However, both of these classical accounts we…
How Should a Stigmatized Diagnosis Be Conveyed? How What Went Wrong Is Represented in Swallow Me Whole
This essay considers the ethical problems raised by a scene of diagnosis presentation in Nate Powell's graphic novel Swallow Me Whole, in which the patient is not only not engaged by the physician, but also effectively marginalized from the moment that her condition is named and medicalized. Put in the context of the book as a whole and in relationship to the unique affordances of the comics form, however, we see that though the physician made a …
Transmedial Narratives in the Age of Mixed Media
Media scholars, and especially for those of us working on transmedial narrative, invest heavily in the idea of media specificity. But what happens when we acknowledge that media itself is never a stable thing? This essay argues that as we continue our important inquiry into the phenomenon of transmedial storytelling we need open up both the category and the methods we use to study it, ultimately calling for a transdisciplinary laboratory approach…
Storylines
Storylines Jared Gardner (bio) While many of the most influential models in narrative theory emerged out of the study of literary narrative, it has from the start been motivated by what James Phelan calls an "expansionist impulse" to direct its gaze to across media (Phelan 206). Such expansion is never without its tensions, of course. Given the profound differences between cinematic narrative and literary narrative, for example, one could have im…

Master Plots: Race and the Founding of American Literature
Master Plots: Race and the Founding of an American Literature, 1787-1845

Early writers were drawn to fantasies of an American and an literature came to be defined not only by its desire for cultural uniqueness but also by …
