    Open Access•Scott J Fitzpatrick, Bronwyn K Brew et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 19

Research has shown a link between gender, violence, and suicide. This relationship is complex, and few empirical studies have explored suicide and family and interpersonal violence perpetrated by men. Drawing on a coronial dataset of suicide cases and a mixed methods design, this study integrated a quantitative analysis of 155 suicide cases with a qualitative analysis of medico-legal reports from 32 cases. Findings showed different types and patt…

Drought is a global threat to public health. Increasingly, the impact of drought on mental health and wellbeing is being recognised. This paper investigates the relationship between drought and wellbeing to determine which drought indices most effectively capture wellbeing outcomes. A thorough understanding of the relationship between drought and wellbeing must consider the: (i) three aspects of drought (duration, frequency and magnitude); (ii) d…

  • Local TV News Viewer Reactions to Weathercasters Reporting the Local Impacts of Climate Change

Allison Engblom, Kristin Timm et al.•ARTICLE•Weather, Climate, and Society•2019

Most Americans misperceive climate change as distant risk; TV weathercasters can help correct this misperception by reporting on the current local impacts of climate change. Some weathercasters, however, are concerned that such reporting may alienate skeptical viewers. The goal of this study was to develop a better understanding of how viewers respond to climate change information delivered by weathercasters. Interviews were conducted with 30 loc…

  • Romanticism and Animal Rights

Onno Oerlemans, David Perkins•ARTICLE•Studies in Romanticism•2004•Cited by: 14

In England in the second half of the eighteenth century an unprecedented amount of writing urged kindness to animals. This theme was carried in many genres, from sermons to encyclopedias, from scientific works to literature for children, and in the poetry of Cowper, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Clare and others. Romanticism and Animal Rights discusses the arguments writers used, and the particular meanings of these arguments in a social and economic co…

  • Effects of Rapport, Intellectual Excitement, and Learning on Students' Perceived Ratings of College Instructors

Open Access•Deion Perkins, David Perkins et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1995

In two experiments the effects of rapport, intellectual excitement, and learning on students' evaluations of teaching were investigated. College students (135 women, 56 men) were first given a written scenario of an instructor who was described as having either high or low rapport with his students and high or low in intellectual excitement and as someone from whom students learned a great deal or very little. Students were then asked to evaluate…

  • Is Literary History Possible

  • Is literary history possible?

    David Perkins•BOOK•Is literary history possible?•1992

"Is Literary History Possible? is a landmark study of the thinking underlying recent theory about literary history. Through analysis of particular literary histories--most of them contemporary works--Perkins elaborates on two fundamental problems that arise in the writing of literary history: the contradictions inherent in organizing, structuring, and presenting the subject; and the "always unsuccessful" attempt of literary histories to explain t…

  • Discursive Form versus the Past in Literary History

    David Perkins•ARTICLE•New Literary History•1991

A ENERATION of younger scholars in the United States is returning to literary history. They are reconsidering its theory, and, as they write it, they are arguing for and providing new models of what it should be, and thus they are responding anew to the imperative, voiced at the very start of modern literary history by the Schlegel brothers, that history and theory should be one. I have followed these developments with the keenest interest and sy…

  • Effects of Grading Standards Information, Assigned Grade, and Grade Discrepancies on Students' Evaluations

Open Access•Deion Perkins, David Perkins et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1990

The present study investigated the influence of information on grading standards and assigned grades on expected grades and students' ratings of instruction. Introductory psychology students ( n = 117) first viewed a videotaped lecture and completed an examination over the content. Using a 3 × 3 factorial design, students were randomly assigned to one of three conditions of information on instructors' grading (hard, fair, easy) and, based on thei…

Four instructional conditions were evaluated: (1) one child using a…

Open Access•David Perkins, Robert D Abbott et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1982

The correlation between student rating of instructor and affective outcomes of instruction was studied in two samples (n = 388 and n = 344) of Introductory Psychology students enrolled in 18 different classes. Correlations were calculated within each class, for students pooled across classes, and between-class means. In general, correlations were positive and of the same magnitude as correlations between student ratings of instructor and cognitiv…

  • Reliability and Validity Evidence for Scales Measuring Dimensions of Student Ratings of Instruction

    Open Access•Robert D Abbott, David Perkins•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1982

In three studies, students in introductory psychology classes evaluated their instructor on a set of student-rating-of-instruction items. Based upon item content and the results of a component analysis of the item intercorrelations in each of the three samples, four scales were constructed. High internal consistency estimates of reliability and similarities in the scale intercorrelations were present over the three studies. The scale scores were …

The acquisition of delayed matching to sample in two groups of pigeons was examined when three delay values (2, 4, and 6 sec.) were mixed across trials and when each of the three delay values was correlated with one of three standard stimuli (i.e., multiple delays). Extended training resulted in the acquisition of matching by all multiple-delay Ss, while only one of three mixed-delay Ss showed comparable performance. The one S which acquired matc…

  • Children's metaphoric productions and preferences

Open Access•H Gardner, Mary Kircher et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•1975

The capacity to perceive similarity between apparently dissimilar domains is widely regarded as crucial to creative thought; yet little is known about the development of this ‘metaphoric’ skill. To assess children's capacities to effect appropriate ‘metaphoric links’, and to discriminate among metaphors of varying appropriateness, a task probing verbal metaphoric skill was designed. Subjects ranging in age from 4 to 19 years were required to comp…
