Facebook likes and corporate revenue: Testing the consistency between attitude and behavior
Whether a person’s attitude is predictive or consistent with their behavior is a topic that has generated much research in the literature. The current study attempts to address this research question using a big data approach in a social media advertising context. Both attitude (i.e. clicking the “like” button for a company’s Facebook posts) and behavior (i.e. purchasing products from the company) are measured in a naturalistic setting. The goal …
Mental Reflexes
Conceptually, Timothy Wientzen's Automatic resembles a large, inverted pyramid. The top level describes a general conviction in the twentieth century that the human mind is governed by reflexes much like those that can be observed in the body. The next level down, slightly narrower, finds versions of and reactions to this general idea in four social developments: Bergsonian vitalism, the industry of public relations, Pavlovian physiology and beha…

The Afterlife of Modernism
The Afterlife of Modernism Michael North (bio) I For some time now, anxiety has been building around the fact that we live in a period without a name. It seems that the passing of the postmodern into history has left a vacuum, at least in nomenclature, that nothing is able to fill.1 Since, by most accounts, the postmodern has been gone for almost thirty years, this crisis in periodization has lasted as long as some periods.2 It has lasted so long…
What Is the Present?: A History of the Here and Now
A provocative new look at concepts of the present, their connection to ideas about time, and their effect on literature, art, and cultureThe problem of the present—what it is and what it means—is one that has vexed generations of thinkers and artists. Because modernity places so much value on the present, many critics argue that people today spend far too much time in the here and now—but how can we tell without first knowing what the here and no…

Relationship building through reputation and tribalism on companies’ Facebook pages: A uses and gratifications approach
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to adopt the uses and gratifications theory (Katz et al., 1974) to understand the phenomenon of relationship building on Facebook. In addition to company-related uses and gratifications, self-related uses and gratifications – expressing self-concept and seeking social interactions and entertainment – were identified. Company reputation and tribalism were incorporated in the theoretical model as underlying mech…
Boots on the Ground: How international news channels incorporate user-generated content into their YouTube presence
Through a content analysis of 571 videos posted on the self-generated YouTube channels of five international news channels, this study examines whether user-generated content is a significant part of today’s international journalism. The study includes international news channels Al Jazeera English, France 24 English, Russia Today, CNN International, and Al Arabiya. Exploring the implications for gatekeeping theory, the study looked at how these …
Promoting a global brand: A study of international news organisations’ YouTube channels
For international news organisations with sometimes limited access to cable and broadcast distribution outlets, self-generated YouTube channels offer an opportunity to share their content with a worldwide audience and to position themselves strategically. This content analysis of 475 YouTube videos posted by 4 international news organisations during 1 week examines what stories were covered and how, and offers insight into what that says about th…

Do Our Facebook Friends Make Us Feel Worse? A Study of Social Comparison and Emotion: Facebook Social Comparison and Emotion
People often compare themselves to others to gain a better understanding of the self in a process known as social comparison. The current study discusses how people engage in a social comparison process on Facebook, and how observing content from their Facebook friends may affect their emotions. A 2 (comparison direction) × 2 (relational closeness) × 2 (self-esteem) between-subjects experiment was conducted with 163 adult participants. The result…

Repast Simphony Statecharts
Agent states and transitions between states are important abstractions in agent-based social simulation (ABSS). Although it is common to develop ad hoc implementations of state-based and transition-based agent behaviors, 'best practice' software engineering processes provide transparent and formally grounded design notations that translate directly into working implementations. Statecharts are a software engineering design methodology and an expl…
An Empire of Communication
Joachim Whaley’s two volumes on the Holy Roman Empire constitute what is undoubtedly the best work on the topic currently available on the European market. Of course, we already have a wide variety of historical accounts of the Empire, but Whaley surpasses all of them. Research into the history of the Holy Roman Empire has a long tradition, in particular after it experienced a surge of interest in the 1970s thanks to Karl Otmar von Arentin, Peter…

Through a series of in-depth interviews with news managers, social media producers, and public relations officials at Al Jazeera, CNN, Globo, Telecinco, RTVE, the US government's Office of Cuba Broadcasting, and Voice of America, the authors examined how these policies may affect the fram…
Tutorial on agent-based modelling and simulation
Agent-based modelling and simulation (ABMS) is a relatively new approach to modelling systems composed of autonomous, interacting agents. Agent-based modelling is a way to model the dynamics of complex systems and complex adaptive systems. Such systems often self-organize themselves and create emergent order. Agent-based models also include models of behaviour (human or otherwise) and are used to observe the collective effects of agent behaviours…

Edward Taylor's Metaphors of Promise
rm HE TORMENTS of Edward Taylor's position as Puritan poet have I been emphasized recently, almost to the exclusion of its meager joys.1 Yet Puritan dogma also presents certain opportunities for poetry. It offers kind of metaphor and poetic strategy that help poet like Taylor solve the spiritual problems under which he labors. The Lord's Supper was for Taylor the crowning ritual of Christianity, and its celebration was the occasion for each of hi…

The Architecture of Memory: Pound and the Tempio Malatestiano
N beginning his new poem of some length, Ezra Pound balances the relative merits of two different poetic methods. He proposes to Give up th'intaglio and perhaps to replace it with the appropriate to the modern world: rag-bag to stuff all its thought in.1 The two different methods represent two entirely different, in fact opposed, methods of arriving at poetic truth. Where one relies on selection, on the carefully incised lines of the intaglio, th…

The Political Aesthetic of Yeats, Eliot, and Pound
The politics of Yeats, Eliot and Pound have long been a source of discomfort and difficulty for literary critics and cultural historians. In The Political Aesthetic of Yeats, Eliot and Pound, Michael North offers a subtle reading of these issues by linking aesthetic modernism with an attempt in all these writers to resolve basic contradictions in modern liberalism. The many contradictions of modernism, which is seen as inwardly personal yet imper…

Reading 1922: A Return to the Scene of the Modern
This engaging study returns to a truly remarkable year, the year in which both Ulysses and The Waste Land were published, in which The Great Gatsby was set, and during which the Fascisti took over in Italy, the Irish Free State was born, the Harlem Renaissance reached its peak, Charlie Chaplin's popularity crested, and King Tutankhamen's tomb was discovered. In short, the year which not only in hindsight became the primal scene of literary modern…

International Media, International Modernism, and the Struggle with Sound
An early episode in the history of globalization took place in the fall of 1927 with the premiere of what was commonly referred to at the time as 'the most important picture in the history of the movies.'1 The picture in question was F. W. Murnau's Sunrise, and one source of its contemporary prestige was the fact that it could be billed as the 'first international' film production.2 It's a little hard at this remove to see what right Sunrise had …
