Background:  The EU has set targets where the public will have electronic access to their medical records by 2030.  The European Health Data Space (EHDS) aims to support individuals to take control of their own health data and supports the use of data for better healthcare.  In Ireland, the Sláintecare health reform programme has goals around using digital technologies in health and social care.  The Department of Health has published the Gen…

  • Engaging people in the development of person-centred national standards for home support services

Open Access•Judy Gannon, Carolina Bassul et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Background: Most people wish to be cared for in their own homes for as long as possible, and home support services can help to achieve this. The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) is developing National Standards for Home Support Services to drive improvements in the provision of home support services and complement legis…

  • Applying a Human Rights‐Based Approach to Formal Care and Support Provided in the Home

Open Access•Yvonne Kelly, Judy Gannon et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2024

Providing formal care and support in the home has many benefits. Applying a human rights‐based approach places the person and their human rights at the centre of all that a health and social care service does. There is a paucity of evidence on how to apply a human rights‐based approach in practice when providing homecare. Increasing knowledge and understanding of human rights will empower health and social care practitioners to protect and promot…

  • South African newspaper coverage of Covid-19

Open Access•Herman Wasserman, Wallace Chuma et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Media Studies•2021

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has led to unprecedented media coverage globally and in South Africa where, at the time of writing, over 20,000 people had died from the virus. This article explores how mainstream print media covered the COVID-19 pandemic during this time of crisis. The news media play a key role in keeping the public informed during such health crises and potentially shape citizens’ perceptions of the pandemic. Drawing on a cont…

  • An Implementation Science Laboratory as One Approach to Whole System Improvement

Open Access•Rachel Flynn, Stephanie Brooks et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Implementation science (IS) has emerged as an integral component for evidence-based whole system improvement. IS studies the best methods to promote the systematic uptake of evidence-based interventions into routine practice to improve the quality and effectiveness of health service delivery and patient care. IS laboratories (IS labs) are one mechanism to integrate implementation science as an evidence-based approach to whole system improvement a…

  • Developing an Initial Program Theory to Explain How Patient-Reported Outcomes Are Used in Health Care Settings

    Open Access•Rachel Flynn, Kara Schick-Makaroff et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 41

A central aspect of any theory-driven realist investigation (synthesis or evaluation) is to develop an initial program theory (IPT). An IPT can be used to frame and understand how, for whom, why, and under what contexts complex interventions work or not. Despite well-established evidence that IPTs are a central aspect to any realist investigation, there is wide variation and a lack of methodological discussion on how to develop an IPT. In this ar…

  • Stereotyping by omission and commission

Open Access•Michael Quayle, Alanna Wurm et al.•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 35

This paper explores the way in which announcers created spectacle in the Eurosport coverage of the men’s and women’s tennis singles semi-finals and finals at the Australian Open 2015. This was an event where gender representations were under global social media scrutiny after two female players were asked to ‘twirl’ for the audience. We used a two-phase thematic analysis. Semantic thematic analysis showed that more personal descriptions were dire…

This article discusses four challenges to conducting qualitative focus groups: (1) maximizing research budgets through innovative methodological approaches, (2) recruiting health-care professionals for qualitative health research, (3) conducting focus groups with health-care professionals across geographically dispersed areas, and (4) taking into consideration data richness when using different focus group data collection methods. In light of the…

  • "Hybrid Governance," Legitimacy, and (Il)legality in the Informal Cross-Border Trade in Panyimur, Northwest Uganda

    Open Access•Kristof Titeca, Rachel Flynn•ARTICLE•African Studies Review•2014•Cited by: 24•References: 27

By looking at a number of different commodities and how they are traded, this article shows how informal cross-border trade in West Nile and Panyimur, Uganda, is governed by a locally negotiated system of hybrid governance, in which neither state nor nonstate actors have a regulatory monopoly. Notions such as legality and illegality are secondary to the functioning of these hybrid institutions, which instead are the outcome of perceptions of the …

  • Border parasites

    Open Access•Melissa Parker, T Allen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern African Studies•2012•Cited by: 7•References: 24

It is recognized that the control of schistosomisais in Uganda requires a focus on fisherfolk. Large numbers suffer from this water-borne parasitic disease; notably along the shores of lakes Albert and Victoria and along the River Nile. Since 2004, a policy has been adopted of providing drugs, free of charge, to all those at risk. The strategy has been reported to be successful, but closer investigation reveals serious problems. This paper draws …
