  • Roundtable

    Open Access•Daniel A Gordon, Ayla Aglan et al.•ARTICLE•French History•2024

Professor Harry Roderick Kedward (1937–2023), universally known as Rod Kedward, is best known for his groundbreaking studies of the French Resistance, discussed in diverse ways by several contributors to this roundtable.1 Yet as Chris Warne emphasizes below, Rod’s interests extended in time and space well beyond the Second World War. Indeed, to fully comprehend Rod, it is important to understand him as a soixante-huitard—close witness to many of …

  • Peatland Geomorphology and Carbon Cycling

    Open Access•Martin G Evans, Martin Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 63

Peatlands in the northern hemisphere are important stores of soil carbon. The stability of peatlands is therefore important for the preservation of a major terrestrial carbon store as well as for the maintenance of the carbon storage function of peatlands. Peatland erosion has the potential to significantly impact carbon storage. This article reviews the evidence from eroding peatland systems, largely in the United Kingdom, to develop the thesis …

  • On the Asymmetry of g

    Open Access•Martin G Evans, Martin Evans•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1999

In this paper the strength of general intelligence at different levels of g is explored. This represents a replication of 1996 work by Dreary, et al. using a very large sample of young persons. By examining differences in correlation between subscales and by undertaking a confirmatory factor analysis of a standard ability measure, the Armed Services Vocational Ability Battery, at high and low levels of g ( n = c. 600 at each level), it is shown t…

  • The Effect of Scale Changes on Meta-Analysis of Multiplicative and Main Effects Models

Open Access•Vinay Kanetkar, Martin G Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1995

It is well-known that when researchers explore conditional relationships, they have to be quite careful about the impact of scaling on the size of these relationships. In this article, the impact of such changes on meta-analyses of conditional relationships is explored. A number of parameters (correlations, regression coefficients, standardized regression coefficients, semipartial correlations, and partial correlations) are examined. Their streng…

  • The Motivational Potential of Jobs

    Open Access•Martin G Evans, Martin Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1991

A recent note by Ferris and Gilmore (1985) on the use of alternative Motivating Potential Score formulae has led us to undertake this replication of their work. Four versions of the formula were tested in a large heterogeneous sample of 1193 male blue-collar employees. Over-all job satisfaction and satisfaction with work itself were the dependent variables. A measure, unique to this paper, of Growth Need Strength was used as a moderator. The best…

  • The Role of Job Outcomes and Values in Understanding the Union's Impact on Job Satisfaction

    Open Access•Martin G Evans, Martin Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1990•Cited by: 2•References: 16

In this paper, the consequences of being a union member for a person's job satisfaction is explored. Berger, Olson, and Boudreau (1983) suggest that union membership is related to the job outcomes that people receive and the job values that they hold (or else that people with particular values choose unionized work settings); so that if these factors are controlled, it is hypothesized that there is no effect of union membership on job satisfactio…

  • Job Enrichment and Job Satisfaction in Quality of Working Life and Nonquality of Working Life Work Sites

    Open Access•Daniel A Ondrack, Martin G Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Quality of Working Life (QWL) programs are designed to increase the enrichment of jobs, the autonomy of workers, and the degree of collaboration among workers and between workers and management. This study examines the impact of QWL programs in five petrochemical plants by contrasting worker attitudes and job perceptions in these plants with perceptions from those in the same industry as well as from those in plants in different industries. Few d…
