  • Role of deductive science in evaluation of alternatives in environmental assessment

Fred Curtis, Henry T Epp et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•1999

As in all scientific-based decision-making, the methodologies used in environmental assessment must be as objective as possible. Applying hypothetico-deductive (h-d) scientific procedures to information used in environmental evaluation may contribute to the objectivity. This process involves identification of development site or plan alternatives which are tested by attempting to falsify each one on the basis of equivalent criteria and data. The …

  • Water vapour as a tracer for ventilation rate measurements

    J C Giesbrecht, Fred Curtis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1999

A feasibility study was conducted to determine whether water vapour could be reliably employed as a tracer gas in ventilation measurements using tracer decay. A simple tracer decay method using water vapour was proposed and tested on three residential‐size buildings, each having different expected moisture reactivities. The field tests found that the method was accurate within ± 10% for a relatively unfurnished, moisture resistant building. The m…

  • Social Distress Theory and Teaching About Homelessness

Ann L Saltzman, Fred Curtis•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Distress and…•1994

This paper provides a retrospective analysis of our course:“Hamelessness in the United States: An Interdisciplinary Approach.” It analyzes how such a course reveals social distress on two distinct levels: course content and course process. We deploy the concepts, tenets and insights of social distress theory to provide a retrospective analytical framework for the course. In addition, we extend the theory by presenting two corollaries to it and sh…

  • Trait Anxiety, Perception of Potential Nuclear Hazard, and State Anxiety

    Open Access•Anton De Man, Paul Simpson-Housley et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1984

89 residents of an area located near a designated nuclear site took part in an investigation of the relationship between trait-anxiety and perceptions of potential nuclear disaster and between such perceptions and state anxiety. No significant correlation was found between trait-anxiety and expectation of future accidents or between this measure of anxiety and estimation of potential damage. Expectation of an accident and estimation of damage wer…

  • Trait Anxiety and Response to Potential Flood Disaster

    Open Access•Anton De Man, Paul Simpson-Housley et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1984

81 subjects participated in a study examining the relationship between trait-anxiety, as measured by the trait subscale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and perceptions of or responses to potential floodhazard, as evaluated by an objective questionnaire. In assessing these relationships the interactive effects of a number of relevant variables were investigated. Correlations suggested that trait-anxiety was negatively related to expectation …

  • Contradiction and Uneven Development in South Africa

    Open Access•Fred Curtis•ARTICLE•The Journal of Modern African…•1984•Cited by: 2•References: 2

In the post-World War II period, South African capitalism is considered by many to have been reproduced on the basis of 'cheap' African labour-power. This is generally understood to mean that the prosperity of capitalism in the Republic depended on the poverty of the African majority. On the one hand, between 1950 and 1979, gross domestic product grew (in constant 1970 prices) from R4·4 billion to R15·5 billion. On the other hand, Africans on ave…
