Das Kind im alten Ägypten
The Names of Hatshepsut as King
Although for most of her reign Hatshepsut was depicted with the traditional image of a male king, the names that she used as king were formed with grammatically feminine participles, thus openly acknowledging her female status. In addition, these names were deliberately constructed to incorporate references to goddesses, references that were probably intended to allude to Hatshepsut's divine aspect as king and to reinforce the legitimacy of her r…

On Supposed Connections between the ‘Canon of Proportions’ and Metrology

A Painted Fragment from the Tomb of Ḏʿw at Deir el Gebrawi
Our knowledge of the late Old Kingdom painted tombs at Deir el Gebrawi derives, almost exclusively, from the efforts of the British Egyptologist, Norman de Garis Davies (18651941) who copied the representations and inscriptions from fifteen rock-cut tombs at the site from 23 February to 13 April 1900. The results were subsequently published in 1902 as the eleventh and twelfth numbers of the Egypt Exploration Fund's Archaeological Survey of Egypt …

Proportions of Standing Figures in the North-West Palace of Aššurnaṣirpal II at Nimrud
My purpose in this paper is to examine the proportions of standing figures in Neo-Assyrian art using methods similar to those that have proved effective on the art of ancient Egypt. In Egypt artists developed a canon of proportions for the human figure during the Old Kingdom, and by the 12th dynasty they had introduced a squared grid system as an aid to obtaining these proportions. Standing figures were drawn on a grid consisting of 18 squares be…
