  • Elite Coalitions and Rebel Control in Northern Côte d'Ivoire

    Jeremy S Speight, Jeremy Speight•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2024•References: 46

How do armed movements gain civilian compliance and prevent counter-mobilization in localities under their wartime control? This paper argues that rebel capacity to control civilians is contingent on the coalitions formed between rebel mid-level commanders and elite groups embedded in local communities. Rebels are confronted with coalitional choices because local communities are contested and comprised of multiple sets of elite groups. Coalitiona…

  • The Political Legacies of Rebel Rule

    Open Access•Peter A Martins, Giulia Piccolino et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Political Studies•2022•Cited by: 9•References: 46

How does exposure to rebel rule affect citizens’ political attitudes after armed conflicts end? We combine original survey data from Côte d’Ivoire with a natural experiment based on the arbitrary location of a ceasefire boundary to estimate the effects of exposure to rebel rule by the Forces Nouvelles (FN) on Ivorians’ sense of democratic citizenship. Our findings show that individuals in communities ruled by the FN held more negative attitudes a…

  • Ex-Rebel Authority after Civil War

    Peter A Martins, Philip A Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Politics•2021•Cited by: 18

How do former armed militants exercise local political power after civil wars end? Building on recent advances in the study of "rebel rulers" and local goods provision by armed groups, this article offers a typology of ex-rebel commander authority that emphasizes two dimensions of former militants' power: local-level ties to civilian populations ruled during civil war and national-level ties to post-conflict state elites. Put together, these dime…

  • Bouna, une « instabilité permanente »

    Jeremy Speight•ARTICLE•Afrique contemporaine•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 27

  • Pathways from rebellion

    Jeremy Speight, Katrin Wittig•ARTICLE•African Affairs•2018•Cited by: 2

Across diverse liberal war-to-peace transitions, the integration of former armed movements into the post-accord political system has been identified as a significant factor in determining the success of peace processes. There is now a growing literature focusing on rebel-to-party transformations in the aftermath of armed conflict. Despite on-going debates over the long-term implications of rebel-to-party conversions for existing party systems, ac…

  • Warlord undone? Strongman politics and post-conflict state-building in Northeastern Côte d'Ivoire (2002–2013)

    Jeremy Speight•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of African…•2014

This article examines the role played by strongmen in Côte d'Ivoire's post-conflict reconstruction. While many acknowledge the unhindered or even the enhanced political influence these actors often enjoy as a result of their relationship to the state in post-conflict contexts, existing debates in Côte d'Ivoire, as well as elsewhere, often remain couched in terms of the implications of these kinds of relationships. Does working with rural strongme…

  • Rebel Organisation and Local Politics

    Jeremy Speight•ARTICLE•Civil Wars•2013•Cited by: 3

Scholars have begun to show how variations in the organization of rebellion in war can impact outcomes related to the violence used against civilians, military effectiveness of armed groups and the post-conflict transitions. This article suggests that existing approaches in this literature overlook sub-group variations in relationships between national-level leaders of armed movements and local commanders. Exogenous factors that explain organizat…
