Mobility and Its Determinants at the Lower Echelons of Society
This article, based on household panel data collected from slum surveys in the national capital of India, Delhi, aims at assessing the phenomenon of mobility and its determinants in the context of the city’s slums. It notes that mobility occurred in a highly limited sense and, second, the extent of mobility is not uniform across slum households, which, in the literature, is interpreted as time-independent mobility. The article also envisages chan…
The Industrialisation of the Workforce: Some Reflections
This paper reflects on the importance of industry-led-growth and based on the review of a large number of studies it investigates the possible causes affecting the industrialization of workforce adversely. Though the technology spill-over literature presents favourable evidence, the import of technology is seen to reduce the employment content per unit of value added. Deregulation of the labour market also does not hold much prospects for employm…
Are Cities in Advanced Countries Saturated in Population Size
Although the focus on urbanization has shifted to developing countries, developed countries still face several challenges. In this regard, the present study proposes to investigate the capacity of cities in developed countries in terms of population size and reflects on the interaction between the city's core and hinterland areas. In addition, the impact of cities on employment, gross domestic product, and productivity, as well as the short‐ and …
Wage Variations Across Sectors and Types of Employment in India
Wage determination depends on a number of factors, including policy initiatives and the presence/absence of labor market institutions. Some of these unobserved variables may be captured in terms of the sector and/or the nature of employment itself. This study tries to focus on the sector of choice or employment type as an important determinant of wages/earnings, after including the important controls. However, a serious endogeneity issue is encou…
Air Pollution Effects on Labour Market: Evidence from Asymmetric Analysis
This study aims to evaluate the impact of greenhouse gas emissions on unemployment. Panel data encompassing 180 nations spanning the time frame from 1995 to 2018 has been employed. To capture non-linear and asymmetric effects, a recently developed panel quantile estimator has been used. The findings refute the notion of the environmental Kuznets curve and demonstrate that when emissions are at a low level, an increase in emissions leads to a high…

Rural Non-farm Sector: Revisiting the Census Towns
The last decade (2001–2011) has witnessed a surge in the number of census towns (CTs) in India, which account for 30% of the country’s urban growth. Though several studies have tried to understand the spatial patterns and factors determining the emergence of these CTs, the all India level has been neglected. Due to an increase in non-farm activities, villages have been transformed into CTs. By considering 2,328 CTs at the all India level, this ar…
Fourth industrial revolution and India's “employment problem”
Purpose This paper aims at assessing the impact of innovation on productivity as sustainable development can be attained primarily through non-resource-driven growth. Secondly, it also proposes to reflect on the rising capital intensity in the Indian industries as technology advancement, particularly in the light of the fourth industrial revolution, is expected to reduce the labour absorbing capacity of the industrial sector. Design/methodology/a…
Migration, caste and livelihood: Evidence from Indian city-slums
This paper based on a primary survey of slum dwellers in four Indian cities examines the caste dimension of migrants and the nexus, if any, between caste and the job market participation. Based on the quantitative exercises, we observe overlaps between social and economic status. A higher propensity to migrate is evident among the population belonging to the general (GEN) category and other backward castes in comparison to the scheduled castes an…
Growth, health and gender imbalance: Evidence from India
In an examination of the relationships between imbalanced gender ratios and the growth–health–poverty nexus, a simultaneous equation model (based on panel data) identifies an adverse impact of poor health conditions on the gender ratio. Better health services and health outcomes can raise the survival rate of girl children and women, while a higher gender ratio (a greater presence of women) is associated with an increased survival rate of girl ch…
Technological progress, innovation and employment: Firm-level evidence from India’s manufacturing sector
In an attempt to assess the impact of technology and innovation on employment this paper, based on Indian firm-level data, considers TFPG/technical efficiency and research and development expenditure as two key variables. Relating to TFPG or TE, findings are not indicative of any major decline in employment except in one or two industries. Turning to R&D expenditure, three industries showed a positive effect on employment to sales ratio and it is…

Do neighbourhood facilities matter for slum housing? Evidence from Indian slum clusters
Slum dwellers in developing countries reside in inhuman conditions, with little provision of basic facilities and with considerable overlap between sources of drinking water supply, sewerage and the area for garbage disposal. Is it because clean environment does not enter their decision function for residence selection or is it simply non-affordability? We examine these questions in the context of the registered slum clusters of four Indian citie…

New Patterns in Indian Urbanization: Emergence of Census Towns
This study focuses on the new patterns related to urbanization in India from the 2011 census data, particularly with regard to the emergence of the census towns. What forces are involved in explaining the growth of such towns is an important question and this is what the present article tries to explore. The regional spread of these census towns is examined and based on the district-level data, the growth dynamics of such reclassification of area…
Informal Economy in India: Persistence and Meagreness
This article offers an estimate of the informal sector in non-agricultural activities in the rural and urban areas. It brings out the supply-push segment within the informal sector. The findings of micro-surveys are utilized to construct the well-being index of the households, the members of which are largely engaged in the informal sector. Findings from the qualitative survey are also cited to understand how contractualization and ancillarizatio…

Small versus large manufacturing units: How efficient are they? 1
Keeping in mind the much discussed huge employment potential of small manufacturing units, this study examines the performance of enterprises across organised or formal and unorganised or informal sector enterprises. The analysis tends to offer little evidence in favour of positive links between sectors in terms of performance index, i.e. technical efficiency. The formal sector units obviously are better performers than their informal sector coun…

Makroekonomski izzivi so povzročili izgubo delovnih mest in posledično slabe razmere na trgu dela, kar čutijo osebe brez ustreznih kvalifikacij. Zato težave na trgu dela skupaj s pomanjkanjem socialnega kapitala in primernih stanovanj po dostopni…
Homelessness in France: Labour-market implications
This paper analyses homelessness in France with regard to three major mutually interacting sets of factors: labour-market strains, illegal migration and institutional inadequacy. Macroeconomic challenges have resulted in the loss of jobs and subsequent labour-market hardships, and these have tended to affect those without adequate skills. As a result, labour-market problems together with a lack of social capital and adequate housing at affordable…
Trade in services: Impact on employment in India
India's services sector has been growing rapidly and so also the trade in services. This paper attempts to assess if trade is able to generate employment in the services sector. Based on the time series macro data the direct and indirect effects of exports and imports on employment after deciphering their effects included in the overall growth, are seen to be mostly negligible. This holds both in the case of formal and informal services. Also, as…
Migration, Livelihood and Well-being: Evidence from Indian City Slums
What helps workers from low-income households to access urban job market information and whether migrants are able to experience upward mobility at the place of destination are the two pertinent issues in urban development which this paper tries to examine. Results based on a slum survey in four Indian cities highlight the importance of various informal channels through which urban jobs are accessed. However, these networks reduce the probability…

Women in the Urban Informal Sector: Perpetuation of Meagre Earnings
The argument of exploitation of women workers in the labour market notwithstanding this article examines whether women in India are unable to participate fully in the labour market because they are required to combine their household activities with income yielding jobs. They are constrained to work in the neighbourhood of their residence (the location of the residence having been decided upon by male family members) and can access jobs only thro…
