“I have power in my voice”
Youth who experience interpersonal violence often struggle to access timely and culturally relevant mental health support. Group-based mental health interventions may expand access to care and enhance relevance of services. However, participants’ perspectives are needed to understand how group-based, peer-supported models may facilitate healing. Our objective was to describe recovery experiences of youth who engaged in a group-based, peer-support…
“It Gave Us an Outlet”
School staff are exposed to high levels of occupational stressors and often work within significant resource constraints, putting them at risk for burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS). Initially developed to support community‐based social workers, the Stress‐Less Initiative (SLI) is a 12‐session, team‐based, and internally facilitated intervention intended to build personal, team, and organizational resilience to mitigate STS and burnout.…
This program is literally saving lives”
Our findings demonstrate integration of strengths-based approaches in youth violence prevention programming to support holistic wellbeing beyond risk reduction. Further, our work underscores need to develop evidence for and elevate community-generated solutions to rebuild and heal communities
Mapping Case Management Activities to Support Implementation and Fidelity of a Pediatric Hospital‐Based Violence Intervention Program
Background: Hospital‐based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) provide community‐based case management to victims of violence and address recovery across a range of needs, including safety, medical, mental health, legal, and basic needs. Describing and standardizing program practices are essential in supporting victim service program replication and growth. Our aim was to explicate the discrete activities undertaken within a pediatric HVIP to …

Feasibility of Conducting Child Abuse Research with Girls in Juvenile Detention Using Audio-Computer Assisted Self-Interview (Acasi) Technology
This paper presents a feasibility study of audio computer-assisted self-interview (ACASI) technology used to elicit self-reported histories of child maltreatment among detained adolescent girls (N = 35). We focus on methodological, legal, ethical, and administrative challenges to the collection of sensitive information from minors who are wards of the state. We conclude that extensive collaboration with detention center staff was required to addr…
When a Serious Adverse Event in Research Occurs, How Do Other Volunteers React
Serious adverse events in research involving healthy volunteers are rare, but their impact on other volunteers is unknown. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 60 healthy volunteers at an institution where a healthy research volunteer died. Most volunteers (85%) had heard of the event, but few said it changed their thoughts about joining research (17%), approach to studies or questions asked (25%), or future participation (4%). Despite kn…
Using Community-Based Participatory Research to Develop the PARTNERS Youth Violence Prevention Program
Despite several challenges inherent to CBPR, the current study provides a number of lessons learned for the continued development of relationships and trust among researchers and community members, with particular attention to balancing the demand for systematic implementation of community-based interventions while being responsive to the immediate needs of the community
Interpersonal and mass media communication
This article examines voters’ attentiveness to the news media and participation in political discussions during the New Hampshire presidential primary. Differences in exposure to these intermediaries are explored in an effort to identify where different voters turn for political information. While political attentiveness is strongly correlated with political discussions, attentiveness to the news media is better explained by demographic differenc…
