Towards a Literary Public Sphere: The Mercurio Peruano , Lima, 1791
This article examines the applicability of Habermas’s concept of the public sphere to the periodical paper the Mercurio Peruano in 1791. It compares the conditions of production of Habermas’s ‘model’ eighteenth-century European public sphere to those of a colonial, ancien régime Lima complete with social and ethnic divisions and Inquisition censorship. The article examines two ‘postmodern’ critiques of modernity: a general history which argues that it was never solely Western, and a work of Latin American cultural criticism which wishes to leave a modernity seen as eurocentric.
