Luiz Felipe De Alencastro, Albert Garcia Balañà et al.•BOOK•Slavery And Antislavery In Spains…•2022

African slavery was pervasive in Spain’s Atlantic empire yet remained in the margins of the imperial economy until the end of the eighteenth century when the plantation revolution in the Caribbean colonies put the slave traffic and the plantation at the center of colonial exploitation and conflict. • History and the Idea of Hispanic Caribbean Studies

    Ada Ferrer•ARTICLE•Small Axe A Caribbean Journal of…•2016•Citada por: 1

While Caribbean studies appears to be an established domain of inquiry, it often fails to fully incorporate the islands of the Hispanic Caribbean. Studies of the Hispanic Caribbean, meanwhile, are generally dominated by island-specific work. This essay considers the appeal and limits of the idea of Hispanic Caribbean studies for the historical study of the region. Historically, the Hispanic Caribbean at times included islands and colonies such as…

  • Freedom's Mirror

    Open Access•Ada Ferrer•BOOK•Freedom's Mirror•2014

During the Haitian Revolution of 1791–1804, arguably the most radical revolution of the modern world, slaves and former slaves succeeded in ending slavery and establishing an independent state. Yet on the Spanish island of Cuba barely fifty miles distant, the events in Haiti helped usher in the antithesis of revolutionary emancipation. When Cuban planters and authorities saw the devastation of the neighboring colony, they rushed to fill the void …

  • Haiti, Free Soil, and Antislavery in the Revolutionary Atlantic

    Ada Ferrer•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2012

IN THE LATE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY, the French colony of Saint-Domingue was the richest colony in the world. Set in the Caribbean Sea, a short sail from some of the principal American colonies of Britain and Spain, in the 1780s it produced about half of all the sugar and coffee consumed in Europe and the Americas. It was, in the nomenclature of the time, the "Pearl of the Antilles," the "Eden of the Western World." It was there, in late August 1791, …

  • Insurgent Cuba

    Ada Ferrer•BOOK•Insurgent Cuba•1999

In the late nineteenth century, in an age of ascendant racism and imperial expansion, there emerged in Cuba a movement that unified black, mulatto, and white men in an attack on Europe's oldest empire, with the goal of creating a nation explicitly defined as antiracist. This book tells the story of the thirty-year unfolding and undoing of that movement. Ada Ferrer examines the participation of black and mulatto Cubans in nationalist insurgency fr…
