Moses, a Scroll, and the Ark of the Covenant
Above the Torah shrine in the Dura-Europos synagogue, there are four paintings depicting four solo male figures, known as Panels I – IV . This paper revisits Panels II and IV . Relying on early photographs of Panel II , it argues that this painting depicts Moses at Mount Sinai with a scroll in his right hand. Moses receiving a scroll, rather than stone tablets, at Sinai is a well-attested motif in Christian art. The painting from Dura’s synagogue…
A Hebrew Liturgical Text from Dura-Europos (D.Pg. 25)
This paper offers a new edition of D.Pg. 25, the only Hebrew parchment to emerge from Dura-Europos. Since its discovery, scholars highlighted its similarities to the rabbinic Grace after Meals. The new arrangement of the fragments, readings, and reconstructions proposed here allow for a better appreciation of this text’s affinities with various Jewish literary corpora, from the Hebrew Bible, to Second Temple literature, to rabbinic writings, to t…

Torah in Early Jewish Imaginations
Torah is a topic of keen interest among scholars of the Bible and Second Temple Judaism. The Hellenistic age especially witnessed an undeniable textual pluriformity of not only the Pentateuch (Torah), but of a host of other works concerned with traditions of authoritative »teaching« or »instruction« ( torah ) that was related in complex ways to books that would become part of the Hebrew Bible. In the Second Temple period, the term torah was thus …
Torah in Early Jewish Imaginations
The term Torah/ torah can be understood as the five books of Moses (the Pentateuch) or more generally as law, instruction, or teaching including the authoritative interpretation of the Pentateuch. This volume offers innovative studies by a range of scholars regarding the various ways early Jewish texts, including the Dead Sea Scrolls, understood and practiced Torah and torah .
Atoning for the land in the writings of Early Judaism
This paper explores the references to atonement for the land in Early Jewish literature. The notion that sexual misconduct, idolatry, and bloodshed defile the land is well known from such scriptural texts as Lev 18:6–25, 27 and Num 35:33–34. Recent biblical scholarship distinguishes between ritual and moral impurities and places the defilement of the land within the latter category. For such moral impurities, the Torah makes no provision for a ri…

Noachic traditions in the Book of Parables
This note draws attention to two passages from the so-called Noachic interpolations in the Book of Parables where Noah traditions embedded in Qumran scrolls may provide helpful parallels. First, it suggests that the dating of the vision in 1 En. 60:1 is illuminated by a comparison to the Flood chronology in 4Q252. Second, it points out a similar use of Isa 24:18–20 in 1 En. 65:1–5, 9 and 4Q370. In both instances, the suggested parallels highlight…
“Make Me a Sanctuary”
This contribution offers a new reading and reconstruction of an addition found in the text of Exod 24:18–25:1 as preserved in 4Q364 (4 QRP b ) 15. Alluding to Exod 25:8 (and possibly 9), it appears to elucidate the purpose of Moses’s forty days’ long stay atop Mount Sinai and serves as a nexus between Exod 24:18 and the following discussion of the Tabernacle

Deuteronomy in the Texts from the Judean Desert
Second Temple Jewish texts found in the Judean Desert are of paramount importance for those interested in early transmission, interpretation, and reception of Deuteronomy. These texts, particularly the scrolls found in the caves near Khirbet Qumran, yield multiple manuscripts of Deuteronomy that predate the medieval copies by more than one thousand years. Revealing a plethora of variant readings, some known from other textual witnesses and some n…
Q148 (4QPhylactère U)
This contribution is the first attempt at deciphering a miniature opistograph 4Q148 included in Józef T. Milik’s DJD 6 edition of tefillin and mezuzot from Qumran Cave 4. It proposes that the partially folded recto of this tiny fragment contains a non- scriptural text. A handful of legible words may suggest a prayer. Its verso, inscribed by a different hand, appears to be a legal text, evoking monetary amounts, perhaps related to inheritance. Fol…

On Prophets, Warriors, and Kings
While recent decades have seen a plethora of studies exploring the complex processes that shaped biblical books traditionally designated as Prophets, much remains to be done in order to uncover the rich history of their interpretation throughout the ages. This collection of essays aims at filling this gap by exploring different aspects of the exegesis of the Former and Latter Prophets in contexts both ancient and modern, Jewish and Christian. Fro…

Mixing criticism of habits with political propositions, Lopes Gama, who used in a peculiar way the concepts formulated by the Frenchman Alexis de Tocqueville, spread the idea that Brazilians were not able to be ruled by democratic institutions. These ideas were not only widel…
