Developing the Indigenous Language and Wellbeing Survey
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages can be seen as an integral aspect of cultural health. While colonisation has had devastating effects upon Indigenous languages, communities are increasingly reclaiming their languages, as a means to cultural preservation, community wellbeing and healing. Currently, there are no tools that specifically measure the potential positive impacts of language revival on the wellbeing of Indigenous peoples. …
Patterns of mental healthcare provision in rural areas
In conclusion, this study strongly supports gathering data on the provision of care in rural areas using standardized methods to inform rural service planning. It provides information on context and service availability, capacity and balance of care that may improve, directly or through subsequent analyses, the management and planning of services in rural areas

Language Breathes Life”—Barngarla Community Perspectives on the Wellbeing Impacts of Reclaiming a Dormant Australian Aboriginal Language
Traditional languages are a key element of Indigenous peoples' identity, cultural expression, autonomy, spiritual and intellectual sovereignty, and wellbeing. While the links between Indigenous language loss and poor mental health have been demonstrated in several settings, little research has sought to identify the potential psychological benefits that may derive from language reclamation. The revival of the Barngarla language on the Eyre Penins…

The Wonder of Their Voices
Over the last several decades, video testimony with aging Holocaust survivors has brought these witnesses into the limelight. Yet the success of these projects has made it seem that little survivor testimony took place in earlier years. In truth, thousands of survivors began to recount their experience at the earliest opportunity. This book provides the first full-length case study of early postwar Holocaust testimony, focusing on David Boder's 1…
Strong Enough to Carry Experience’
This article examines the special status of the English language in representing the Holocaust. To this end, I look first at three authors who wrote in the late 1940s—David Boder, John Hersey and Ruth Chatterton—and argue that they, in different ways, evoke anxiety in writing about the Holocaust in English. I contrast this early post—war writing with the more recent approach of Anne Michaels in Fugitive Pieces, where one finds a celebration of En…
Autobiography from the Other Side
Usually when you agree to write a foreword, you do so because you truly care about the book: it's readable, the literary quality is high, you like or at least admire the author. This book, however, is the extreme opposite. --Primo Levi, Foreword to Rudolf Hoess's "My Soul" Great autobiographers have generally been heroes, personalities whose memoirs are justified by exemplary lives. To be sure, the stories these exemplary figures tell are not wit…
Multidisciplinary Mental Health Teams
This study surveyed current practice amongst 91 Indian and Australian staff working within multidisciplinary mental health teams, looking at leadership skills, conflict resolution and therapeutic abilities. Length of training was asso ciated with management skills, though these skills were more developed by psychiatric nurses and occupational therapists working in community settings. Hospital settings involved less consensual decision-making than…
Application of cognitive-behavioural family intervention for schizophrenia in multidisciplinary teams
Cognitive-behavioural family interventions for schizophrenia have demonstrated utility in reducing relapse rates and improving functional status, but there is little information on the routine application of this work. In the current study therapists in standard health care settings were trained in delivering a cognitive-behavioural intervention to clients and families. Six months to 3 years after the family training, 45 therapists reported the n…
