Back to Basics
This study contributes to ongoing discussions on how measures of lexical diversity (LD) can help discriminate between essays from second language learners of English, whose work has been assessed as belonging to levels B1 to C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The focus is, in particular, on how different operationalizations of what constitutes a ‘different word’ (type) impact on the LD measures themselves and on their abilit…
Online disclosure of employment information
This paper investigates the perceptions and behaviour of government employees regarding the disclosure of employment information. Two different contexts, namely 1) official websites and 2) online social networks (OSN: in this case, Facebook) that disclose employees' employment information are selected as contrasting platforms in order to understand how government employees behave towards the same type of information in different contexts. This pr…
What's yours is mine and what's mine's my own
Many online services assume that they each account will only be accessed by one person, ever. This is even enshrined in the terms and conditions for some. However, our identities are bound up with others in various ways, in both life and death, legally and socially. A basic classification system for multiple ownership of accounts is proposed, based on fictionalised accounts of real world problems encountered by the authors and their acquaintances

Moocs
Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are a recent addition to the range of online learning options. Since 2008, MOOCs have been run by a variety of public and elite universities, especially in North America. Many academics have taken interest in MOOCs recognising the potential to deliver education around the globe on an unprecedented scale; some of these academics are taking a research-oriented perspective and academic papers describing their rese…
Multilateral Nuclear Disarmament
Although the political salience of nuclear disarmament has fallen dramatically since the end of the Cold War, the threat posed by nuclear weapons today remains at least as great as it was before 1989. The growing number of states either armed with or actively developing nuclear weapons programmes has placed existing control and monitoring frameworks under strain. In this article, Baroness Williams, a long time campaigner for multilateral nuclear …
The American Presidential Election 2012
The election of Barack Obama as President of the United States in November 2008 was an electric moment for the whole world, a shock in the course of history. The world's most powerful democracy had chosen a black man from a humble background, grandson of a Kenyan peasant who had risen to be a cook in the British Army. It was a truly amazing reaffirmation of the equal opportunity for all that is the stuff of the American dream. Shirley Williams ex…

Critical decisions and questions regarding serious case reviews – ideas from North West England
Purpose Serious case reviews (SCRs) are one means of learning the lessons arising from adverse, salient incidents and tragedies. Adult Safeguarding Boards in England are expected to have an SCR policy and procedure, to commission SCRs, to abstract and act on the learning, and to monitor the resulting action plans. Design/methodology/approach Since SCRs reflect a wide range of processes, the authors undertook a general review, drawing on their exp…

An innovative scholarship led by indigenous peoples is emerging worldwide with an emphasis on questioning the knowledge, privileges and paradigms of the Western academy. One of the challenges of supporting new indigenous scholarship within the Western academy is to find ways to engage meaningfully with indigenous knowledge.
