An analysis of repeat food bank use and development of an ‘opportunity pathways’ framework
This commentary presents findings from a research project investigating repeat food bank use in Nottingham, UK. The research was commissioned to explore reasons for repeat food bank use and identify gaps in non-food support. The research found that the drivers for food bank use in Nottingham are a combination of complex financial and personal factors, typically not addressed at wider community and systems levels. These factors were similar for re…
Gender, resilience and recognition: Masculinities and transitions out of care in Russia
Research on young people leaving care often points to a clear gendering of pathways, but has hitherto paid little attention to gender. This article uses a gender lens to develop a perspective on the dynamic processes of exclusion and inclusion that mark transitions to adulthood amongst young men leaving care in Russia. It does this by combining insights from the sociology of masculinities with recent theorising around the concepts of resilience a…

Welfare in Russia and Eurasia in the Context of the Covid-19 Pandemic
THE POST-SOVIET ERA BEGAN WITH WIDE-RANGING economic and institutional dislocations that had an enormous impact on the lives of most people in the societies affected. In the first years of the 1990s, poverty, morbidity and mortality rates grew to unprecedented levels, as birth rates declined (Haub 1994).While few escaped the consequences of the collapse of state socialism, it was clear that certain groups were especially marginalised in the new ma…
Young people leaving care and institutionalised vulnerability in the Russian Federation
Care leavers are often considered to constitute some of the most disadvantaged young people in society, and there exists a significant body of research that seeks to understand why some young people ‘succeed’, whereas others struggle due to accumulated ‘vulnerabilities’. Despite this extensive research base, policy and practice aiming to support young people leaving care remain diverse, indicating a lack of consensus on why some experience ‘poor …
Remaking a “Failed” Masculinity: Working-Class Young Men, Breadwinning, and Morality in Contemporary Russia
Much of the sociological work examining the changing fortunes of working-class young men has emphasized their newly precarious position as well as the “hollowed out” nature of their class subjectivities. By contrast, and echoing work on the adaptability of hegemonic forms of masculinity, this article points to the ongoing salience of working-class masculinities, drawing on longitudinal research with young men in Russia’s Ul’yanovsk region between…
Deaf Youth in Contemporary Russia: Barriers to Inclusion in Education and the Labour Market
This essay explores the changing shape of transitions from education to employment amongst deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHOH) youth in Russia. It draws on survey and interview data to show that, despite the formal institution of inclusive policies and legal frameworks at the state level, the choices open to DHOH youth remain heavily limited, and become narrower at each stage of their transitions to adulthood. This narrowing of horizons and attendant…
Smoking and Religion: Untangling Associations Using English Survey Data
While factors affecting smoking are well documented, the role of religion has received little attention. This national study aims to assess the extent to which religious affiliation is associated with current-smoking and ever-smoking, controlling for age, sex, ethnicity and socio-economic status. Variations between adult and youth populations are examined using secondary analysis of individual-level data from 5 years of the Health Survey for Engl…
Masculinity, Labour, and Neoliberalism
I just don't want to connect my life with this occupation: Working-class young men, manual labour, and social mobility in contemporaryRussia
A key strand in the Western literature on working-class masculinities focuses on whether young men are capable of the feminized performances apparently required of them in new service economies. However, the wider literature on processes of neoliberalization - emphasizing the 'hollowing out' of labour markets, the cultural devaluation of lower-skilled forms of employment, and the pathologization of working-class lives - would suggest that it is a…

I Don't Really Like Tedious, Monotonous Work: Working-class Young Women, Service Sector Employment and Social Mobility in Contemporary Russia
This article contributes a global perspective to the emerging literature on girlhood in western contexts by examining the changing shape of transitions to adulthood amongst working-class young women in St. Petersburg, Russia. As in many western countries, new forms of service sector employment and an increasingly accessible higher education system appear to offer young women new prospects for social mobility. In contrast to the increasingly impov…

Navigating a ‘zombie’ system: Youth transitions from vocational education in post‐Soviet Russia

This article explores a similar disparity in the transitions of young people graduating from vocational training (IVET) colleges in post‐Soviet Russia. The State, Society, and Politics in Peru and Mexico in the Late Colonial and Early Republican Periods
The central feature that united the late colonial period, the Wars of Independence, and the early republican decades in Latin America was the destruction of the colonial political and economic order by a combination of world events and internal forces, clearing the path for capitalist development. The events of this era are part of protracted bourgeois revolutions. This statement does not imply that the political struggles of the early 19th centu…

Outline for a Psycho-Sociology of Assembly Line Work
