  • O Papel Do Atlântico No Povoamento Indígena Da América Do Sul

  • Geophysical exploration of Guajará, a prehistoric earth mound in Brazil

    Open Access•Bruce W Bevan, Anna Roosevelt et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2003•Cited by: 18•References: 3

An interdisciplinary team studied Guajará, a prehistoric artificial mound in the Brazilian Amazon. The geophysical surveys and excavations were interactive;this interaction furnished more information than either geophysics or excavation alone could have provided. While seven different geophysical methods were applied, the magnetic survey reported here was particularly valuable. A detailed interpretation of this survey quantified the magnetic mate…

  • The Development of Prehistoric Complex Societies: Amazonia, A Tropical Forest

    Open Access•Anna Roosevelt, Anna C Roosevelt•ARTICLE•Archeological Papers of the…•1999•Cited by: 62•References: 41

Early research in Amazonia suggested the possibility that prehistoric complex societies had developed in several regions, despite assumptions that humid tropical conditions would prevent such developments. Under the rubric of cultural ecology, various processes have been hypothesized for the development of these societies: invasion and subsequent devolution of groups from expanding states in temperate regions outside Amazonia, social and ecologic…

  • The Demise of the Alaka Initial Ceramic Phase Has been Greatly Exaggerated: Response to D. Williams

    Open Access•Anna Roosevelt, Anna C Roosevelt•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1997•Cited by: 1

Denis Williams writes to comment on my article on Archaic shell mound pottery in eastern South America (Roosevelt 1995). He states that he will “correct” my article by putting on record “new facts.” Rather than correct my article, Williams"s comment misstates both the content of my article and that of earlier literature on Guyanese archaeology, and it merely repeats the data included in my article. In addition, Williams's comment presents some in…
