Tempo and Mode in Secondary Succession
Ecology needs a unified view of the patterns and processes of secondary succession; we addressed that on the Coiba Island, Panama. We measured tree diameters and determined the land-use histories and structural properties for nine stands. We detected land-use history-legacy gradients ranging from no-use to still-in-use sites (Linear Regressions, R2≥0.87 for Above-Ground Biomass and Basal Area, n=7 stands). Three successional pathways derived from…
Land-use, abuse, and institutional attempts for correcting human-nature relationships
Warnings regarding pollution, soil-fertility losses, mass extinction, Climate Change, and their effects on humans are widely known since at least 1970, still land-abuse pervasively remains. We aimed to contribute to understand why in order to explore how to reduce land-abuse. We critically compared the history, habitats, and land-uses of the Americas with both Alpine and Lowland Europe focusing on the causes and consequences of land-abuse. We chr…
Salsa Con Coco
Land-use history and the origins and effects of lianas on tree-communities. The case of secondary forests in Northeastern Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Economic problems generate large secondary tropical forests due to crop abandonment; lianas (woody vines climbing upon trees) proliferate there. Lianas generally retard the growth and carbon capture of trees, potentially enhancing global change. It is not known whether all liana species play such a role and which land-use disturbances determined the cur rent species composition of liana communities. We surveyed all lianas >lcm diameter at ground …
