Marine Pollution
Marine pollution, or the disruption to the natural ecology, particularly of the earth's oceans but also of related water systems, is an increasingly serious and potentially catastrophic problem in the Anthropocene epoch. Some of the human dimensions include issues that can be thought of broadly as tragedy of the commons, exacerbated by a mismatch between a truly global problem, and levels of governance organized around collectives with competing …
Elective Affinities in the Anthropocene
To reach a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between religion and the natural environment, it is important to move beyond essentializing any religious tradition as having a pro-environmental or anti-environmental ethic. Rather, prior work has shown that the canonical, scholarly, and popular literatures and discourse of a number of religious traditions can and have been socially and rhetorically constructed as supporting an array of…
Perception of Western governments’ hostility to Islam among European Muslims before and after Isis
Perception of Western governments’ hostility to Islam is one of the indicating features of Islamic fundamentalism and, in some cases, is serving as a pull to join extremist groups. In this paper, using data from two waves of a cross‐national survey, we investigate what affects European Muslims’ opinions about Western governments. We find that residential segregation is associated with perceived hostility of Western governments to Islam. Further, …
Marine Pollution
Marine pollution refers to the degradation of the earth's oceans. The vast preponderance of marine pollution can be attributed to ways in which humankind relates to the natural environment. Sources include runoff from the use of herbicides, chemical fertilizers, and insecticides in farming, industrial wastes, trailings from mine operations, oil spills, improperly treated sewage, and silt from erosion. To understand the human causes of environment…
Metatheorizing Structural Human Ecology at the Dawn of the Third Millennium
While its processes have been unfolding for centuries, some aspects of human interaction with the natural environment are unprecedented. In recent centuries, the world has experienced unparalleled technological change, wealth accumulation and population growth and concentration; these have led to extraordinary levels of other problems, particularly environmental degradation. Focusing on mismatches between the adaptive cycle and the organization o…

Nós examinamos as maneiras pelas quais as questões ambienta…
Effects of Rural and Urban Population Dynamics and National Development on Deforestation in Less-Developed Countries, 1990-2000
While prior research and theorization establish connections between population growth and environmental degradation, there is a relative paucity of research on what particularaspectsof population dynamics are most closely associated with specific types of degradation. Considering all less-developed countries for which data are available, using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression we generate quantitative, cross-national models for rates of defo…

Change Scores, Composites and Reliability Issues in Cross-National Development Research
While a number of researchers of world development examine social change using composite measures as indicators, there is a relative paucity of research on the reliability of these change score composites over time. We construct two development composites based simply on factor analysis, one economic and one social, and then perform reliability analysis on these two development composites at two discrete points in time (i.e. 1970 and 1985) and th…
Theorizing and Rethinking Linkages Between the Natural Environment and the Modern World-System
Building on prior work in world-system analysis and human ecology, we test a macro-level theory that social and demographic causes of deforestation will vary across zones of the modern world-system. Using multivariate regression analysis, we examine models of deforestation over the period 1990-2000. We test for main effects of world-system posmon, two different population variables (urbanization and proportion under working age), and economic dev…
A Cross-National Analysis of Militarization and Well-Being Relationships in Developing Countries
Position in the World-System and National Emissions of Greenhouse Gases
Despite the apparent importance of these dynamics, there is relatively little social science theorization and cross-national research on such global environmental issues. There is especially a paucity of cross-national, quantitative research in sociology that focuses on the social antecedents to environmental outcomes (for exceptions, see Burns et al. 1994, 1995; Kick et al. 1996; Grimes and Roberts 1995). We find this condition surprising given …
Class dimensions, individualism, and political orientation
Poulantzas’ three class‐determining aspects of power (ownership, authority, and mental labor) are examined as predictors of individualism, which in turn is tested for its effect on political orientation. Of the three class dimensions considered, mental labor alone was found to have a significant effect on individualism. Although ownership had no significant attitudinal effect, it was the only class dimension of the three tested to directly influe…
