  • Grambank reveals the importance of genealogical constraints on linguistic diversity and highlights the impact of language loss

Hedvig Skirgård, Hannah J Haynie et al.•PREPRINT•2022

While global patterns of human genetic diversity are increasingly well characterized, the diversity of human languages remains less systematically described. Here we outline the Grambank database. With over 400,000 data points and 2,400 languages, Grambank is the largest comparative grammatical database available. Wendy Hesford, Adela Licona et al.•BOOK•Precarious Rhetorics•2018

OUR COLLEC TION has come together in the midst of the rise of the global Right. It will likely be received and circulate in a global context wherein this ascendency has been consolidated through an entrenched hard-right populism, marked by xenophobia and racialized social orderings, and characterized by nativist, heteronormative, hypermasculine, and heteropatriarchal leadership styles and structures.Such structures are apparent in the authoritaria…

  • Wanderwörter in languages of the Americas and Australia

Open Access•Hannah Haynie, Hannah J Haynie et al.•ARTICLE•Ampersand•2014

They are, however, found frequently in languages from across the world. There is, to our knowledge, no general synthesis of Wanderwörter patterns, causes of exceptionally high borrowing rates for particular lexical items, or estimates of their frequency ac…

We compare the etymologies of ethnobiological nomenclature in 130 hunter-gatherer and agriculturist languages in Australia, North America, and Amazonia. Previous work has identified correlations between systems of ethnobiological terminology and dominant means of community subsistence, relating stability of terminology to the “salience” of the items. However, the relevance of subsistence patterns to the development of ethnobiological nomenclature…

    Open Access•Jane Hill, G Wright•ARTICLE•The Howard Journal of Criminal…•2003

This article is based upon an ethnographic study of two housing estates in two English cities. The data gathered have highlighted the gaps between policy and practice in relation to the inclusion of young people in local community safety initiatives. It argues that the discourse of community safety is underpinned by a limited notion of inclusion that is predicated upon adult ‘law‐abiding’ citizenship and a specific interpretation of the concept o…
