Social distance and the veil
The company scatters, the lights go out, the song dies, the guitars grow silent, as they approach the habitations of man. Put on your masks; you are again among your brothers. José Rizal in Noli Me Tangere This is an essay on the means by which man promotes the establishment of social relationships and the maintenance of social interaction through aloofness, removal, and reserve. It attempts, on one level, to present a functional interpretation o…

General: A Runaway World? Edmund Leach
A Runaway World? is the book form of the Reith Lectures, which Edmund Leach delivered over the BBC network in 1967.Both subject matter and style are in the classic manner of the Third Programme, which addresses itself to grand problems in language intelligible to the educated layman.Leach's theme was nothing less than man's ability to cope with his own creations, and he used the occasion to air some rather outrageous ideas on the family, educatio…
Tuareg Kinship1
The assumption that a positive congruence exists between social structure and kinship terminology is questioned, and an alternate hypothesis offered that kinship terms may be a contradiction of the social system and a transformation of it on the cultural level. Tuareg kinship terminology is analyzed in relationship to the social system, and a discontinuity is found between the Iroquois terminology and kingroup endogamy, including a preference for…

Credit Versus Cash: A Case Study

This mode of exchange, which I shall call "barter-credit," is characterized by an almost complete absence of the use of cash in economic transactions, although monetary units are used as referents …
