  • A Theory of Instrumental Social Networks

    Richard A Thompson•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•1973•Cited by: 2

Network theory, although well advanced as a conceptual and methodological tool for structural analysis, has not yet attained a commensurate level of sophistication in the specification of the functional components of social networks. The present paper is devoted to the formulation of a theory of one functional aspect of ego-centered networks, with special reference to Latin American social systems. It is suggested that, particularly under conditi…

  • Structural Statistics and Structural Mechanics: The Analysis of Compadrazgo

    Richard A Thompson•ARTICLE•Southwestern Journal of…•1971•Cited by: 1

In an exploration of the structural implications of the selection of compadres in a Middle American town, two formal models are constructed from statistical data obtained from a random sample of informants. These models, derived from set theory and information theory, respectively, provide alternative frameworks for making explicit inferences about the underlying mechanical properties of the selection system. It is noted that there is a significa…

  • Stochastics and Structure: Cultural Change and Social Mobility in a Yucatec Town

    Richard A Thompson•ARTICLE•Southwestern Journal of…•1970•Cited by: 4

The study of the dynamic properties of a system of social stratification provides critical structural information on cultural change. Mobility data are particularly useful in the construction of models predicting the structural effects of accelerated change. Data from a small urban setting are incorporated into a stochastic model which yields a structural index of the effects of the introduction of new variables into the system, variables reorder…

  • Transformational theory and semantic analysis

    Open Access•Richard A Thompson•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•1968•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Schools of thought concerning the study of language in anthropology and in linguistics proper have developed historically along lines that are sometimes convergent, but too often divergent because of a certain gap in communication between the two disciplines. It is the purpose of this paper to suggest the existence of an area of common interest which is at present unrecognized in the literature. I submit that recent work in what anthropologists r…
