    Open Access•Anthony T Carter•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•1984•References: 27

Using materials from India, this paper explores some of the implica tions of stochastic demographic variation for theories of household management and fertility. Householders sometimes try to control it, therefore, through behaviors that influence mortality differentials by sex. Analyses of birth intervals and reproductive …

  • The acquisition of social deixis: Children's usages of 'kin' terms in Maharashtra, India

    Open Access•Anthony T Carter•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•1984•Cited by: 8•References: 10

In relatively unstructured interviews, Maratha and Brahmin children in Maharashtra, India, are asked to identify and to speak about household members, relatives, friends, and neighbours. It is argued that characteristic features of the usages and definitions of so-called 'kin' terms of young children as compared to those of adults reflect not only an incomplete grasp of the adult system of kinship reference, but also a quite accurate understandin…

Focusing on alternative analyses of South Asian materials, this paper examines several of the assumptions underlying structural semantic analyses of systems of kintype classification. It is argued that inappropriate genealogical concepts must be avoided in the interpretation of such systems and that indigenous concepts of relatedness must be distinguished from kinship terms per se. It is suggested that intraregional comparisons may be used to cho…
