Same-Sex Behavior of Heterosexual Men
In terms of human sexuality, there are many studies on same-sex behavior and opposite-sex behavior, but both-sex behavior is vastly overlooked. Such bisexual invisibility may be due to the fact that bisexuality does not follow a universal behavioral pattern, which implies that a cross-cultural approach could be very helpful. This study combined qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate 255 behaviorally bisexual males of low socioeconomi…
Debate sobre o artigo de Elmo Rodrigues da Silva & Fermin Roland Schramm
Our modern concern over the environment brings us to the historical discussion of Scientific Rationalism, principally in contemporary western society, where the conflict between Man and the Natural World is at its greatest. In an attempt to solve this conflict, Ecology, a field of science, stands out riddled with problems, seeking to draw subjects from other fields into its own. Following an "ecologized world view" (Ecosystemics), some social cur…

Paid Sex Specialists among the Mekranoti
The Mekranoti Indians of Central Brazil are unusual among nonstratified societies in having kupry, unmarried women with children, who provide sexual services to the community's men in return for gifts of beads, meat, and other items. Using quantified data, this study examines the characteristics of these women and the reasons they become kupry. Like prostitutes in stratified societies, kupry are held in lower esteem than other women and are more …

Are Some People More Equal than Others? Status Inequality among the Mekranoti Indians of Central Brazil
This study uses quantified data from the Mekranoti Indians to examine three questions about status inequality in nonstratified societies. (1) Are influence and prestige evenly distributed among the population? (2) Are there material rewards to leadership? (3) Is there equal access to influence? Statistical findings give "no" answers to all three questions, emphasizing the necessity for distinguishing among status inequality, economic inequality, …
Gerontocracy among the Mekranoti of Central Brazil
Many societies in the world give great prestige and influence to their elders. This study examines various arguments anthropologists have offered to explain gerontocracy. Some anthropologists emphasize the social ties individuals acquire with age-sons, affines, friends, and economic dependents. Others stress personality changes in old age. And still others emphasize the acquisition of knowledge or expertise. Correlational studies and path analysi…
Ecology and Acculturation Among Native Peoples of Central Brazil
Simple exposure to Western goods may not be a sufficient explanation of why isolated village communities increase their participation in external market economies. The degree of market participation by four native villages in central Brazil is related to the difficulty of making a living from slash-and-burn subsistence agriculture as measured by the ratio of labor input to food output.

A Cross-Cultural Perspective on Theory and Research on Male Homosexuality
In an effort to uncover useful directions for future research, this paper examines the cross-cultural data on male homosexuality in light of various theories that might account for its variation. Looking first at different psychological explanations, the study suggests that the sex of one's childhood companions may be an important factor in the origin of homosexuality. Two possible explanations for an association between male homosexuality and mi…
