On Folk Archaeology in Anthropological Perspective
The Thick and the Thin: On the Interpretive Theoretical Program of Clifford Geertz [and Comments and Reply]
The promise of interpretive theory has led Clifford Geertz to call for a new and different anthropology as well as a broad "refiguration of social thought" in the social sciences and humanities. This essay examines Geertz's theoretical program, including its application to the specific cases of Balinese trance and the Balinese theatre state. Special attention is given to Geertz's claim that interpretive theory is superior to conventional social s…
The Authentication of the Turin Shroud: An Issue in Archaeological Epistemology [and Comments and Reply]
The Turin Shroud has generated controversy ever since its first known display in 1353. Appearing under suspicious circumstances in an age of relic worship and forgery, it would long ago have been dismissed but for the unusual body image it bears. Scientific scrutiny of this "burial cloth of Christ" began in 1900 with anatomical studies of the apparent body imprint and its wounds suggesting crucifixion. Medical opinion has been unanimous in descri…

Biological Analogy, Diffusionism, and Archaeology
A "biologization" of anthropological theory has recently been proposed by scholars from various subfields of the discipline. One aspect of that phenomenon is Harold K. Schneider's proposal to rewrite world history as a diffusionary process based on a biological model. Time-Lapse Photography in Archaeological Data Recording
Archaeologists have made little use of motion picture techniques for basic data records, relying on still photography, notebooks and drawings. Since excavation is a continuous process, and the basic scientific experiment of digging destroys site evidence, it is proposed that simple but non-static techniques of time-lapse photography be used to document the excavation as process and to aid in laboratory “reconstruction” of site evidence
