Revitalizing the Study of Kinship and Exchange with Network Approaches
RECONSIDERING A NETWORK APPROACH TO KINSHIP AND EXCHANGE The arguments put forward in this book are intended to help revitalize the study of kinship and exchange. To express some of the current contributions to this field of research, we adopt a network perspective (on current network analysis, see Burt 1992; Degenne and Forsé 1994; Freeman, White, and Romney 1989; Schweizer 1996; Scott 1991; Wasserman and Faust 1994; Wasserman and Galaskiewicz 1…
Marriage, Exchange, and Alliance
As a prolific economist-turned-anthropologist, Duran Bell creates an underlying theoretical dialogue with ethnographers such as Rao and Dietrich over our understandings of exchange and alliance-formation occasioned by marriage. These introductory remarks play on this dialogue in hopes that debate over these issues will enrich the theoretical capabilities of anthropology in its interface with economics. Two considerations help to prepare for a clo…
Emergence, Development, and Transformation of Kin-Based Exchange Systems
The chapters in this section trace the emergence of and changes in kin-based exchange systems by applying formal models and historical as well as ethnographic reconstruction. The first two chapters use combinatorial methods: Drawing on graph theory, Hage and Harary study the development of political systems in Oceania. Applying algebraic techniques to a problem of structuralist alliance theory, Tjon Sie Fat assesses the combinatorial possibilitie…
Representing Kinship Dynamics, Material Flow, and Economic Cooperation
The chapters in this section share common themes: First, they all address the linkage between kinship and economy. Second, they trace the intertwined temporal flows of marriage and descent on the one hand with property on the other and they do so in the context of specific ethnographic cases. Third, several try to detect order in the networks of kin relations and material flows described in earlier ethnographic sources as “loosely structured” or …
Kinship, Property Transmission, and Stratification in Javanese Villages
INTRODUCTION Kinship is a basic institution in human societies, ordering social interaction, reproduction, and the flow of resources. Although there is some questioning of underlying conceptions and definitions (Schneider 1984), kinship continues to be a central focus of anthropological inquiry (Peletz 1995; Shimizu 1991). The goal of this chapter is to analyze and represent kinship structures in a precise and comprehensible way, focusing on rura…
Individual Embeddedness and the Larger Structure of Kinship and Exchange Networks
The three chapters in this section examine the issue of embeddedness at three successive levels. Böck looks at the embedding of an individual in a field of verbalized norms and values as well as at a network of personal relationships. Bollig treats a series of individuals embedded in an institutionalized moral economy of a community. Göbel examines the embedding of community members in a series of external relationships on which they depend for i…
Kinship, Networks, and Exchange
This collection of articles aims at revitalizing the study of kinship and exchange in a social network perspective. It brings together studies of empirical systems of marriage and descent with investigations of the flow of material resources in societies of Africa, Asia, the Pacific and Europe. Restudies of classic ethnographic cases and fieldwork studies of kinship and exchange demonstrate how the social and material aspects of society are relat…

Embeddedness of Ethnographic Cases
As the world becomes more complex, the work of anthropology, both theoretical and practical, becomes more demanding. People at the local level are increasingly being drawn into larger circuits through economic linkages, demographic processes, social interactions, and flows of information that transcend local and national boundaries. Such global linkages and the new embeddedness they produce require more sophisticated approaches to ethnography. Th…

Economic Individualism and the Community Spirit
In recent years there has been much evidence of an increasing trend towards the individualization of economic and social relations in Javanese village communities. The Green Revolution has been depicted as the main cause of the acceleration of this process in the present. Observations abound on labour-saving devices in rice cultivation, on the monetarization of wages and agrarian inputs, and on the commercial sale of yields (Aass 1986; Hart 1986;…

Agrarian Transformation? Rice Production in A Javanese Village∗
The paper examines the impact of the new rice technologies in Klaten, Central Java, a region considered the cradle of the Green Revolution in Indonesia. It is argued that the changes which have occurred since the 1960s should be viewed not as a dramatic transformation of a formerly static rural economy but rather as part of a continuous process of socio-economic change which has occurred over many decades
Multidimensional Scaling of Internal Differences in Similarity Data
This paper deals with statistical data analysis in anthropology and the perception of interethnic similarity in Indonesia. It is an introduction to nonmetric multidimensional scaling of aggregated similarity data, and an exposition of the INDSCAL model of multidimensional scaling of internal differences ("intracultural variability") in disaggregated similarity information. Both models are applied to statements on interethnic similarity elicited f…
Data Quality and Data Quality Control in Cross-Cultural Studies
This paper applies some distinctions of the philosophy of science to the problem of data quality in cross-cultural studies. It outlines the data quality problem in such studies, and reviews a path analytic partial solu tion and the logic of the usual cross-cultural control procedures. And it presents some results of eross-cultural data quality control
Mighty Sifts
Galton's problem arises from historical connection between societies, which makes the canon of statistical independence inapplicable. The resulting indeterminacy of sample size renders standard tests of statistical significance also inapplicable. In addition, replication might bias results. Seven solutions to Galton's problem have been previously offered, and we have found all of them invalid. Three of them suffer from what we have termed the "sy…
