Breaking a Tradition; the 2016 Honoree
Buscando comple…

Symbolic Dimensions in Cultural Anthropology [and Comments and Reply]
Using the hermeneutical theory of Paul Ricoeur, it is possible to discern symbolic dimensions in cultural anthropology. Symbols, here, are dominant images in anthropologists' texts, creatively posited by inquirers, that, most importantly, possess a surplus of meaning. A symbol's fullest surplus of meaning is a prereflexive and comprehensive "understanding" (Verstehen) that may encompass a scholar's attempts at "explanation" (Erklaren). Examples o…

Faith, Fashion and Family: Religion, Aesthetics, Identity and Social Organization in Strasbourg
This article uses an interpretive perspective to consider the role of religion in the formulation and perpetuation of two domains of social action-aesthetics or style, and family social organization in Strasbourg, France. The analyses show that: 1) there are distinct aesthetic traditions (Protestant and Catholic); 2) in terms of personal adornment, the aesthetic traditions are expressed in styles from which can be read religious identity among th…

Urban Danger: Life in a Neighborhood of Strangers
Multiple locks, vicious dogs, cans of mace, training in karate - city people have tried everything to cope with their sense of danger at home and on the streets. The most common strategy, probably, is avoiding situations or simply living with the problem. Yet fear is not very well related to crime statistics, people of different cultures react differently to the same neighborhood, and people have very different understandings of what danger is. T…

Cultural Constructivism: Sickness Histories and the Understanding of Ethnomedicines beyond Critical Medical Anthropologies
The present paper has two goals. First it attempts to identify and outline some central assumptions of ‘cultural constructivism’ in order to unify and provide a common basis for a variety of interpretive approaches in medical anthropology. In line with this goal, an example of the cultural constructivist approach to sickness and biomedical knowledge is presented. This model of sickness, called a ‘Sickness History’, is offered to demonstrate the h…
