  • Interspecies Relations in the Midst of the Russia–Ukraine War

    Tanya Richardson•ARTICLE•Current History•2023

To convey the scale of destruction that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has caused to animals, plants, and ecosystems, analysts frequently use national-scale maps, aggregate figures, and the concept of ecocide. Although necessary, these moves risk portraying Ukraine exclusively as a zone of catastrophe, while obscuring the character of on-the-ground socioecological relations. This article enlarges the space for environmental narratives about war bet…

  • Body-worn cameras as a research tool in early years settings

    Open Access•Tanya Richardson•ARTICLE•Journal of Early Childhood Research•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This paper discusses the innovative research method of using body-worn cameras for capturing speech and experiences of 3- to 5-year olds in English early years settings. The strengths and weaknesses will be discussed in this multiple case study approach to capturing the quality of speech from young children ( n = 43). Adopting an interactionist theoretical framework and viewing the project through an interpretive paradigm, it is asserted there is…

  • The Terrestrialization of Amphibious Life in a Danube Delta 'Town on Water

    Open Access•Tanya Richardson•ARTICLE•Suomen Antropologi Journal of the…•2019•Cited by: 2

The Danube Delta town of Vilkovo is often called the 'Ukrainian Venice' because of its 40 kilometers of canals. Many of these canals, however, are rapidly filling in with silt and are often impassible by boat. Tourism entrepreneurs and town administrators have begun lobbying for funding for a large-scale canal restoration project and for the town's designation as a heritage site. Their tourism-development narratives, however, often overlook or si…

  • Managing ambiguous amphibians

    Tanya Richardson•ARTICLE•Canadian Slavonic Papers•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 42

This paper analyzes how a herd of feral cattle emerged in the core zone of Ukraine’s Danube Biosphere Reserve and why it still exists despite numerous challenges to the legality of its presence there. Answering these questions requires an analytical approach that begins from the premise that animals, plants, substances, documents, and technologies are active participants in making social and political worlds rather than passive objects of human i…

  • The Politics of Multiplication in a Failed Soviet Irrigation Project, Or, How Sasyk Has Been Kept from the Sea

    Tanya Richardson•ARTICLE•Ethnos•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 32

Between 1976 and 1980, a Soviet agro-industrial project turned the Sasyk estuary in southern Ukraine into a freshwater irrigation reservoir. While the project failed to produce irrigable water, it had many negative environmental consequences. Despite two decades of activism, this water body persists in its freshwater state. To understand how this situation persists, resources need to be conceived as materialities emergent in and distributed acros…

  • On the Limits of Liberalism in Participatory Environmental Governance

    Open Access•Tanya Richardson•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 32

Participatory management techniques are widely promoted in environmental and protected area governance as a means of preventing and mitigating conflict. The World Bank project that created Ukraine's Danube Biosphere Reserve included such 'community participation' components. The Reserve, however, has been involved in conflicts and scandals in which rumour, denunciation and prayer have played a prominent part. The cases described in this article d…

  • Walking Streets, Talking History

    Open Access•Tanya Richardson•ARTICLE•Ethnology•2005•Cited by: 2

Through walking streets and talking history, the members of the My Odessa club sense their city as place. History is encountered in buildings, ruins, monuments, and stories as both a diffuse feeling and a dialogic process. The walkersâ practice of exploring nooks and crannies of the city and speaking with local residents is informed by a â large familyâ form of sociality, and a notion of Odessa as courtyard where space is conceived as commercial.…
