After the fact. An afterwordNone of the things that should happen when a scientific fact is proclaimed -the exaltation that the assertion of an absolute and compelling truth produces -happened when Mexico's Attorney General Jess Murillo Karam presented the official version of the whereabouts of the 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers' College who disappeared in Iguala, Guerrero, in September 2014.He said in a press conference on Novemb…

  • Seabed in the Andes

    Open Access•Vivette García-Deister•ARTICLE•Engaging Science Technology and…•2023

This commentary engages with the digital materials of STS in/through Turkey, Kenya, Japan, and Ecuador collected between 2018 and 2019, and with the collection of essays inspired by these materials. I use the notion of “splace” as an exploratory tool that challenges the division between space and place, and I also invite thinking about STS formations with geological formations I encountered on the Chilean Andes

  • The Heredity Matrix

    Carlos Lopez-Beltran, A Nieves Delgado et al.•ARTICLE•Science as Culture•2022•References: 18

Empirical data gathered from group discussions with Mexican undergraduate students from different regions and backgrounds showed that students tend to incorporate information about genetics into their accounts of hereditary intergenerational transmission linked to issues of family resemblance, health, and mestizaje (racial admixture) in a nuanced, elaborated, and non-simplistic manner. Locality and cultural variations can define the ways heredita…

    Open Access•L A Smith, Vivette García-Deister•ARTICLE•BioSocieties•2021

In the 1970s, Latin America became a global laboratory for military interventions, the cultivation of terror, and ideological and economic transformation. In response, family groups and young scientists forged a new activist forensics focused on human rights, victim-centered justice, and state accountability, inaugurating new forms of forensic practice. We examine how this new form of forensic practice centered in forensic genetics has led to a c…

Ice cream, blood serum, and other sticky things I n a time of DNA-centric-historization of biomedical science, Joanna Radin's Life on ice: a history of new uses for cold blood is a cool reminder of the sample behind the data, and of the treatment of samples that preceded (and in some cases, permitted) subsequent extraction of DNA.The book is as much a genealogy of ice cream vending machines and German patents as it is Cold War historiography of s…

  • Flattening and Unpacking Human Genetic Variation in Mexico, Postwar to Present

    Open Access•Víctor Hugo Anaya-Muñoz, Vivette García-Deister et al.•ARTICLE•Science in Context•2017

Argument This paper analyzes the research strategies of three different cases in the study of human genetics in Mexico – the work of Rubén Lisker in the 1960s, INMEGEN's mapping of Mexican genomic diversity between 2004 and 2009, and the analysis of Native American variation by Andrés Moreno and his colleagues in contemporary research. We make a distinction between an approach that incorporates multiple disciplinary resources into sampling design…

  • Capturing Los Migrantes Desaparecidos

    L A Smith, Vivette García-Deister•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Science•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 7

Drawing on fourteen months of ethnographic work, we analyze three population-making technologies (denuncias, biobanks, and bodies) that have emerged as dominant tools both on the part of governments and human rights advocates to capture the missing migrants. We conclude that missing migrants are a Population of Cognition that is both made legible and unknowable through specific technologies and delineations of crisis

  • País de gordos/país de muertos

    Open Access•Vivette García-Deister, Carlos Lopez-Beltran•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•2015•Cited by: 13•References: 15

This article provides a comparison between genomic medicine and forensic genetics in Mexico, in light of recent depictions of the nation as a 'país de gordos' (country of the fat) and a 'país de muertos' (country of the dead). We examine the continuities and ruptures in the public image of genetics in these two areas of attention, health and security, focusing especially on how the relevant publics of genetic science are assembled in each case. P…

  • Building the genomic nation

    Open Access•M Kent, Vivette García-Deister et al.•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•2015•Cited by: 18•References: 27

This article explores the relationship between genetic research, nationalism and the construction of collective social identities in Latin America. It makes a comparative analysis of two research projects - the 'Genoma Mexicano' and the 'Homo Brasilis' - both of which sought to establish national and genetic profiles. Both have reproduced and strengthened the idea of their respective nations of focus, incorporating biological elements into debate…
