Impact of mass drug administration with Ivermectin, Diethylcarbamazine, and Albendazole in elimination of lymphatic filariasis in five districts of Nepal
Nepal aims to eliminate lymphatic filariasis (LF) by 2030. Mass drug administration (MDA) has ceased in 53 of the 64 endemic districts. Following failure to pass the pre-Transmission Assessment Survey of antigenemia prevalence, five districts completed two rounds of MDA using a three-drug regimen (Ivermectin, Diethylcarbamazine, and Albendazole; IDA) and achieved over 65% coverage of the total population in 2023 and 2024. An Epidemiological Monit…
A comprehensive assessment of intervals in care pathways among cancer patients in a limited resourced setting: Results of a prospective patterns of care study in 2022 in Nepal
BACKGROUND: Pattern of care studies are crucial to provide evidence on the utilisation of cancer care services in any given settings. Our study in Nepal aimed to quantify the intervals (and delays) across the diagnosis pathway and assess its impact on stage at diagnosis across six common cancers. METHODS: DElays in CAncer care in Nepal (DECAN) study recruited a multicancer cohort of 1182 consecutive patients newly registered over 6 months (June-N…
Family strategies: Labor migration, multigenerational households, and children's schooling in Nepal
Temporary migration to international destinations has many implications for the family members left behind. This paper discusses family economic theoretical perspectives and the family strategies that are adopted in Chitwan, Nepal. The family strategies include single united, split-single generation, multigenerational, and split-multigenerational households that are linked to the presence or absence of fathers and grandfathers. We examined how fa…

In order to monitor public health trends and identify disease outbreaks early, efficient and reliable notification and surveillance systems are essential. Nepal uses a 1-3-7 malaria surveillance approach. The Short Message System (SMS) -based system for timely notification has been established. However, knowledge gaps exist regarding the timeliness of notification, treatment initiation, and case-based investigations. Hence, this study identifies …
The Power of Securing Property Rights: Evidence from China's Land Titling Policy
We develop a theoretical model to study the effect of the land titling program on land transfer, labor allocation, and agricultural production costs in rural China. To conduct empirical analysis, we employ the difference-in-differences and difference-in-difference-in-differences models and use nationally representative household survey data collected in 2013, 2015, and 2017. Results show that land titling significantly increases the probability o…
Nutrition, multidimensional poverty and income: The case of Nepal
This study aims to assess the multidimensional poverty index (MPI) of farm households in Nepal and investigate the influence of various forms of livelihood capital on their income. The calculation of MPI incorporates the nutrition dimension along with health, education, and living standards using the Alkire‐Foster method. The results show that farm households in Nepal face severe multidimensional poverty (MPI = 0.433, using poverty cut‐off criter…

Impact of cooperative membership on market performance of Nepali goat farmers
In developing countries, agricultural cooperatives are increasingly used by farmers as a mechanism to gain market power in input and output markets. To assess the impact of cooperative membership on market channel selection and pricing outcomes, we conducted a survey of 661 Nepali goat farmers in 2019–20 and applied an endogenous switching probit model to analyze the data. Our findings indicate that cooperative membership had a significant and po…

Preference for rural living environment improvement initiatives in China
The Chinese government has launched the Rural Living Environment Improvement Initiative (RLEII) to solve the poor living conditions in rural areas. The initiative enhances rural greenery; provides sanitary toilets; and promotes proper disposal of animal manure, sewage, and household waste in rural areas. We collected data using in-person interviews with 938 rural residents in Xinjiang, China, to elicit their preference, preference intensity, and …
Pollution halo or pollution haven: Assessing the role of foreign direct investment on energy conservation and emission reduction
This paper uses spatial econometric and the threshold effect models to study the effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) in China’s energy conservation and emissions reduction. We use provincial-level data on pollutants (CO2, wastewater emission, exhaust emission, and waste emission) available from 2001 to 2015. Results indicated that FDI not only promotes China’s “energy conservation,” but also improves China’s CO2 emission efficiency and env…

The study sample included 7069 telehealth visits by 1115 unique patients encountered from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021 at six mental…
Impact of self-control on individual income: Evidence from China
This article examines the relationship between individual income and self-control by employing the data available from the China Labor-force Dynamics Survey 2014. Results show that self-control impacts individual income both positively and significantly. Age and gender play moderate roles, while education …
Impact of cooperative membership on production efficiency of smallholder goat farmers in Nepal
Goat is a source of cash income to smallholders in many developing countries. The productivity of goat farmers is poorly understood and assumed similar across all households. Cooperatives are hailed as an institution that can provide market power to smallholders in developing countries. We assess the impact of cooperatives on the technical efficiency of goat farmers in Nepal. Multistage sampling and in-person interviews were used to collect infor…
Farmers' willingness to participate in Forest Management for Carbon Sequestration on the Sloping Land Conservation Program in China
Forest Management for Carbon Sequestration (FMCS) on the Sloping Land Conservation Program (SLCP) helps to promote afforestation, improve the economic wellbeing of small farmers, and helps them to cope with climate change. Based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), this paper examines farmers' willingness to participate from five dimensions: evaluation of result, result belief, normative belief, motivation to comply, and control belief. The influence of land titling on the disparity between willingness to accept and willingness to pay values
Land titling, which aims to promote the transfer of farmland in China by providing property rights to landowners, may not be working as intended due to the presence of an endowment effect. The implications of the endowment effect are that it creates a substantial disparity between the willingness to accept (WTA) and willingness to pay (WTP) values for agricultural land parcels. An inflated WTA/WTP value hinders farmland transfer to those who have…
