  • Structural Patterns of Sibling Classification in Island Oceania

    Mac Marshall, William H Alkire et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1984•Cited by: 8•References: 24

The underlying structure of discriminations in the classification of siblings has received considerable attention. Prior research has demonstrated the tendency of patterns of sibling classification to persist, often for thousands of years, in groups of societies that speak related languages. In this paper it is shown that a sample of 223 societies from Island Oceania exhibits 11 structural types of sibling classification linked in a developmental…

  • Structural similarity, semigroups and idempotents

    Open Access•John Paul Boyd•ARTICLE•Social Networks•1983

  • The universal semigroup of relations

    Open Access•John Paul Boyd•ARTICLE•Social Networks•1979

  • Mathematics in Structural Theory [and Comments and Reply]

Fadwa El Guindi, D Read et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1979•Cited by: 4

Levi-Strauss, amongst other anthropological theorists, has argued for the incorporation of mathematical formalization into anthropological theorizing. The integration of mathematical formalization with anthropological theory is examined in this article through the structural analysis of fandango (wedding) ritual as it is practiced among the Zapotec in a small village near Oaxaca, Mexico. The correspondence that is found between the details of the…

  • Genetic Relations of Polynesian Sibling Terminologies

    Open Access•Philip J Epling, Jerome Kirk et al.•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1973

Relations between anthropology and linguistics are explored through the examination of the taxonomy and phylogeny of a small lexical set (sibling terms) within the Polynesian genetic language/culture unit using traditional and mathematical techniques of historical semantics and ethnology. Preliminary to examination of the Polynesian case a theory of sibling terminologies is developed, building on those of Murdock and of Nerlove and Romney. Beginn…

  • Kinship systems and inverse semigroups

John Paul Boyd, John H Haehl et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mathematical Sociology•1972•Cited by: 8•References: 6

Inverse semigroups are introduced as a model for kinship structures. It is shown that semigroups are implied by the traditional anthropological law of uniform descent, and that inverses are suggested by the principle of reciprocity. A separation into a 'surface' and a 'deep' level of analysis was induced by viewing a kinship system as a partition on an underlying inverse semigroup. Some Omaha-type kinship systems are decomposed into direct and se…
