  • Afterword: The poetics of peccaries

    Open Access•George Mentore•ARTICLE•History and Anthropology•2026

This paper examines the poetics of Waiwai community life, informed by relations with white-lipped peccaries. It seeks to understand how political leadership and its presumption of hierarchy can be more about the collectively felt experience of joy than the necessity of superiority. Considering how bodily feelings relate to food and the contentment it provides, the paper demonstrates how the presence of peccaries contributes to leadership and the …

  • Sovereignty and the Power Aesthetics of Racism

    Open Access•George Mentore•ARTICLE•Culture Studies ↔ Critical…•2026•References: 8

This essay centers on the difficulty of modern sensibility in relinquishing ideas about sovereign power even after recognizing, objecting, and denouncing the use of its violent coercion. The discussion picks up at the point of wonderment about this difficulty being equivalent to that between language and subjectivity. It identifies the partisan work that normative aesthetics performs in convincing the oppressed that their sense of an inferior rac…

  • The "Uncontacted" as Third Infamy

    Open Access•George Mentore•ARTICLE•1700-tal: Nordic Journal for…•2019

This paper principally addresses the "problem" of anthropological thinking, that is, on how and why it remains with us and not with the peoples who do not subscribe to our contested regimes of truth. From my research on the topic, it appears we have not achieved any substantial moral progress on the question of exposure to indigenous otherness since the first European "contact." This failure is primarily due to our hardheaded rationalist refusal …

  • Interview with Edith Turner

    George Mentore•ARTICLE•AIBR, Revista de Antropologia…•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Edith Turner is one of the legends of anthropology of our times. The anthropologist who enters her home can't help feeling a mixture of awe, respect, and excitement contemplating the Ndembu masks that cover the walls. There are also very different artifacts from other places of the world, like Alaska. These are silent witnesses of the more than 60 years of research that Edith Turner has conducted, formerly in collaboration with Victor Turner, and…

  • Spiritual Translucency and Pornocratic Anthropology: Waiwai and Western Interpretations of a Religious Experience

    Open Access•George Mentore•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Humanism•2007

This short article attempts to work within the craft of anthropology but, ultimately, seeks to do so against its historical intent to objectify. It describes and interprets a personal experience of sacred communion. In doing so, however, it argues that the success of any such processes eventually results in an obscene offence against the very experience of religious mystery

  • Guyanese Amerindian epistemology: The Gift From a Pacifist Insurgence

    Open Access•George Mentore•ARTICLE•Race & Class•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This article introduces the idea that Amerindian modes of knowledge are intellectual strategies for defeating racism in Guyana. It is suggested that coming to terms with radically different concepts of time and space provides the means for understanding viable alternatives of social being. The current invisibility of, or deleterious prejudice against, indigenous Amerindian renderings of social being serve merely as opportunities lost to a postcol…

  • Of Passionate Curves and Desirable Cadences: Themes on Waiwai Social Being

    George Mentore•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American…•2006•Cited by: 10•References: 7

Compelling and evocative, Of Passionate Curves and Desirable Cadences reveals the vital cultural interconnections at the heart of a rain-forest Amerindian society. The Waiwai, who live in the remote interior of Guyana and in neighboring Brazil, follow a customary subsistence lifestyle built around swidden agriculture and hunting. How do the Waiwai experience and think about themselves and their place in the so-called modern world around them? The…

  • The Triumph and Sorrow of Beauty: Comparing the Recursive, Contrapuntal, and Cellular Aesthetics of Being

    Open Access•George Mentore•ARTICLE•1700-tal: Nordic Journal for…•2006

The principal assumption put forward in this paper will be that for the Waiwai the privileging of lateral visibility brings ideas about a fractal individual into association with recursive power, while for coastal Guyanese and U.S. societies, respectively, the privileging of axial visibility brings concepts about an autonomous individual into association with contrapuntal and cellular relations of power. It will be argued that, contrary to the Wa…

  • O triunfo e a dor da beleza: Comparando as Estéticas Recursiva, Contrapontística E Celular Do Ser

    Open Access•George Mentore•ARTICLE•Revista de Antropologia•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 7
