Younger Dryas reindeer in northwest Europe: A multi-isotope study of the palaeoecology and mobility of Chelm’s Combe fauna, Britain
Reindeer ( Rangifer tarandus ) played a central role in the subsistence strategies of Late and Final Palaeolithic populations across northern Europe, particularly during the Younger Dryas (c. 12,850–11,650 cal BP). However, while reindeer are known from securely dated Younger Dryas faunal contexts in Britain, they are not associated with archaeological assemblages, and there is currently no conclusive evidence for human presence in Britain at the…
Wind-driven sediment exchange between the Indian marginal seas over the last 18 000 years
The Indian Coastal Current is the only channel for material exchange between the two largest marginal seas in the northern Indian Ocean: the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. However, its past history is poorly known, limiting accurate predictions of its future changes. Here, we present a new clay mineral record from south of India supported by interpretations of model simulations to trace its variability over the last 18 000 years. Decreased sm…
Cost optimisation analysis of the expanded programme for immunisation: Balancing equity and coverage in Pakistan
INTRODUCTION: With limited resources, attaining maximal average health service coverage can be at odds with maximising equity which attempts to promote greater reach among underserved populations. In this study, we examined the trade-offs in immunisation coverage levels and equity for children under 5 years of age in Pakistan across various subpopulations who can be targeted with different combinations of immunisation service modalities. METHODS:…

The Local Government Commission: Examining the Consultative Process
This article shows how a complex configuration of interests has shaped the work of the Local Government Commission for England ( lgc ). The article focuses upon the consultative processes associated with the work of the commission in Leicestershire and makes a dual contribution to our understanding of the emerging structure of English non‐metropolitan local government. Turning a Drama into a Crisis: Perspectives on Contemporary Local Government
Predictions about the end of local government are not new. In 1966 William Robson wrote Local Government in Crisis which pointed to the possible demise of elected local government- and this was an update of texts written in 1947 and 1926! Writing in 1985 in a similar vein George Jones and John Stewart observed

Prehispanic settlement patterns in the lower Santa Valley, Peru: A regional perspective on the origins and development of complex North Coast society
Desert Ground Drawings in the Lower Santa Valley, North Coast of Peru
New data are presented on prehispanic ground drawings discovered and mapped during the 1979-1980 settlement-pattern research in the Santa Valley region, north coast of Peru. Among the drawings, which appear to date to the Early Suchimancillo/Gallinazo time period (ca. B.C./A.D. to A.D. 200), are a number of naturalistic figures-including humans, sierra-related llamas and condors, and a jungle-related (possible) cayman. These figures, and other li…

Of Maize and Men: A Critique of the Maritime Hypothesis of State Origins on the Coast of Peru
The adaptation of preindustrial band and tribal groups to environments subject to aperiodic downturns of long duration can often be understood by reference to limiting factors affecting the productivity of the subsistence system. This paper examines the two alternative hypotheses of the maritime and agricultural foundations of state society on the coast of Peru, and by reference to limiting factors affecting the Peru Coastal Current, argues that …

Party Bureaucracy in Britain: Regional and Area Organization
In recent years the discipline of political science has focused much of its attention on political parties. In 1967 Professor L. D. Epstein noted ‘Writing about Political Parties in Western democracies is not a novel enterprise. It is several decades since political scientists, once preoccupied with constitutional forms, ceased to neglect parties’. In Britain, however, there remains much uncharted territory which requires detailed exploration by …

Conservative City Machines: The End of an Era
Local Conservative associations have traditionally run their affairs independently and have successfully resisted interference from Central Office. Far from constituting a ‘centralized machine’ (as authors such as McKenzie, Beer and Crossman have maintained) the main feature of Conservative organization has been its decentralized, voluntary character. Nowhere has resistance to control by the party headquarters been more determined than in the maj…
