  • The ontogeny of sexual dimorphism in the cranium of Bornean orang-utans (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus): 1. Univariate analysis

Walter Leutenegger, Thomas J Masterson•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Morphologie und…•1989

Based on a homogeneous sample of 212 individuals spanning all postnatal age periods, we examine the ontogeny of cranial sexual dimorphism in Bornean orang-utans (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) by means of univariate statistics. A distinct pattern emerges at the early juvenile stage and continues at all subsequent stages with males tending to exceed females in all cranial dimensions. In conjunction, starting at mid-juvenile stage, there is a strong tend…

  • The ontogeny of sexual dimorphism in the cranium of Bornean orang-utans (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus): II. Allometry and heterochrony

Walter Leutenegger, Thomas J Masterson•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Morphologie und…•1989

Based on a homogeneous sample of 212 individuals spanning all postnatal periods, we examine the ontogeny of cranial sexual dimorphism in Bornean orang-utans (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) by means of allometric analysis and in terms of heterochrony. The bivariate growth allometries of 20 cranial dimensions against basicranial length yield two major patterns. Confirming the null hypothesis, strong ontogenetic scaling, where growth regressions of both s…

  • Sexual dimorphism, mating system, and effect of phylogeny in De Brazza's monkey ( Cercopithecus neglectus )

Open Access•Walter Leutenegger, Gabriele R Lubach et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1987

De Brazza's monkey ( Cercopithecus neglectus ), like other guenons, shows marked sexual dimorphism in an array of features. While strong sexual dimorphism is generally associated with a polygynous mating system, populations of De Brazza's monkeys in Gabon are reportedly monogamous. An explanation of this unique phenomenon is offered here. Patterns of sexual dimorphism are examined for morphology, growth and development, behavior, and ecology, and…

  • Metric variability in the anterior dentition of African colobines

    Open Access•Walter Leutenegger•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1976•Cited by: 10•References: 7

The anterior dentition of three species of African colobines ( Colobus polykomos, C. badius , and C. verus ) was investigated metrically and the results analyzed for three characters: (1) intraspecific tooth size relations, (2) sexual dimorphism, and (3) interspecific relations. Based on incisor size sequences C. polykomos and C. badius appear to be more closely related to each other than either is to C. verus . However, incorporating the results…

  • Sexual dimorphism in the pelves of African lorises

    Open Access•Walter Leutenegger•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1973•Cited by: 10•References: 6

The present study is the first describing sexual dimorphism in the pelves of prosimian primates. Various measurements and indices indicate that there is no significant sexual dimorphism in the pelves of African lorises ( Perodicticus potto and Arctocebus calabarensis ). The lack of even a moderate degree of sexual dimorphism can be interpreted as the result of a lack of marked sexual differences in body size and of absence of selective pressure f…

  • Metric variability of the postcanine dentition in colobus monkeys

    Open Access•Walter Leutenegger•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1971•Cited by: 17•References: 11

The postcanine dentition of three species of colobus monkeys ( Colobus polykomos polykomos, Procolobus badius badius and Procolobus verus ) is compared metrically for three characters: interdental relations, sexual dimorphism and interspecific relations. Interdental relations reveal that the postcanine teeth represent a single morphogenetic field, which supports Butler's concept on the nature of the differentiation and variability of mammalian de…
