Based on interviews with arts administrators responsible for addressing targeted groups labelled “socially excluded,” this paper highlights new understandings of the term “cultural intermediary” (Featherstone 1991; Bourdieu 2000) within art galleries and art centres. It considers the unique role of such figures in crossing the exclusion/inclusion boundary within the arts and developing more personal approaches to marketing activities in their ins…

There is always an overwhelming temptation to conceive of identity and resistance in…

  • A pluralistic seduction? Post-modern consumer research at the crossroads

    Mile, Steven Mile•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•1999•Cited by: 2•References: 7

This paper suggests that the trend towards the conceptualisation of ‘post‐modern’ forms of consumption threatens the very basis of research into consumption and consumers. Arguing that although a fascination with the symbolic aspects of consumption has much to offer, the suggestion here is that the future of consumer research is potentially undermined by a preoccupation with post‐modern rhetoric which has in turn tended to divert consumer researc…

  • The Cultural Capital of Consumption

    Open Access•Mile, Steven Mile•ARTICLE•Culture & Psychology•1996•Cited by: 13•References: 13

Arguing that psychology has failed to come to terms with the cultural context within which identities are established, this paper focuses on consumption as a means of identity formation in a 'postmodern' culture. It is suggested that the impact of consumption upon contemporary identities might be better understood by focusing upon the meanings with which young consumers endow consumer goods. In particular, data obtained through a participant obse…
