The Challenges of Mourning: Nursing Homes Betwixt and Between during the Covid-19 Pandemic
Elderly residents in long-term care facilities were one of the populations in the United States hit hardest by the COVID-19 virus. Their deaths highlighted long-standing systemic problems and unmet expectations of the nursing care industry, and the ways social exclusion exacerbated the suffering of residents and their family members. This article, part of a larger collaborative study of COVID-19 death, draws upon ethnographic interviews on death …
Autism, "Stigma," Disability: A Shifting Historical Terrain
Erving Goffman's 1963 foundational discussion of stigma has been both embraced and critiqued in disability studies and other fields. In Goffman's interactional and ahistorical analysis, stigma was presumed to exist as a natural feature of humanity, deflecting attention away from historical analysis. This article, in contrast, argues that stigma-particularly surrounding "mental illness"-is deeply embedded in historically contingent structural condit…

Influence of Community-Level Cultural Beliefs about Autism on Families' and Professionals' Care for Children
This qualitative study aimed to understand how community-level cultural beliefs affect families' and professionals' care for children with autism and developmental delays in immigrant communities, as a first step towards promoting early identification and access to early intervention services. The study was part of the larger New York City (NYC) Korean Community Autism Project, which was designed to identify strategies to increase awareness of au…

Border Children: Interpreting Autism Spectrum Disorder in South Korea
In this article, we describe reluctant mothers on the brink of accepting autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a diagnosis for their children, but caught in a web of social meanings that push them to resist it. We argue that several tensions underlie this resistance: (1) an opposition between homogeneity and heterogeneity, in which mothers aim to define their child as "normal"; (2) a distinction between social and intellectual domains of child develo…
Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders in a Total Population Sample
OBJECTIVE: Experts disagree about the causes and significance of the recent increases in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Limited data on population base rates contribute to this uncertainty. Using a population-based sample, the authors sought to estimate the prevalence and describe the clinical characteristics of ASDs in school-age children. METHOD: The target population was all 7- to 12-year-old children (N=55,266) in a South…
Commentary: On Being Autistic, and Social
In psychology and allied disciplines, autism has been erroneously conceived as a disease that precludes meaningful social behavior. Anthropologists are beginning to address this problem by rejecting the narrow confines of what constitutes human social functioning, and by showing the complex ways in which autistic children and adults participate in and contribute to their societies. At the same time, anthropologists have begun to contextualize pub…
The Politics of Knowledge: Julian Steward, Leslie White, Melville Herskovits, and L. Luca Cavalli-Sforza
Biographies of four important figures in the history of anthropology—Julian Steward, Leslie White, Melville Herskovits, and L. Luca Cavalli-Sforza—illustrate that current “public anthropology” has deep historic roots and that anthropology, even subfields that involve the basic sciences, like genetics, are shaped by personal and political experience as much as by intellect. All the biographical subjects discussed here had first-hand experience wit…
In the Arms of Africa: The Life of Colin M. Turnbull
Colin Turnbull made a name for himself with The Forest People, his acclaimed study of African Pygmies. His second book, however, The Mountain People, ignited a swirl of controversy within anthropology and tainted Turnbull's reputation as a respected anthropologist. In this scrupulously researched biography, Roy Richard Grinker charts the rise and fall of this colourful controversial man -from his Scottish family and British education to travels i…

Houses in the Rainforest: Ethnicity and Inequality among Farmers and Foragers in Central Africa
This is the first ethnographic study of the farmers and foragers of northeastern Zaire since Colin Turnbull's classic works of the 1960s. Roy Richard Grinker lived for nearly two years among the Lese farmers and their long-term partners, the Efe (Pygmies), learned their languages, and gained unique insights into their complex social relations and ethnic identities. By showing how political organization is structured by ethnic and gender relations…

Images of denigration: Structuring inequality between foragers and farmers in the Ituri forest, Zaire
Research on forager/farmer interactions has focused largely on relations of material exchange, thereby excluding symbolic and social structural aspects of those interactions. Lese representations of Lese (farmer)/Efe (hunter-gatherer) cultural differences shape the symbolic incorporation of Efe trading partners into Lese village life. Since the Lese frequently characterize the Efe as female, gender appears to be a principal idiom through which th…
