Characterizing opioid overdose hotspots for place-based overdose prevention and treatment interventions: A geo-spatial analysis of Rhode Island, USA
Neighborhoods with increased prevalence of housing instability and poverty are at highest risk of overdose. The high availability of social services in overdose hotspots presents an opportunity to work with established organizations to prevent overdose deaths
Controlled Substance Prescription History among Individuals Who Died of an Accidental Opioid-Involved Drug Overdose in Rhode Island
Background: Accidental opioid-involved overdose deaths are increasing nationally in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is unclear if this reflects a change in populations most at risk. Objective: To determine whether the demographic characteristics and controlled substance prescription history of accidental opioid-involved drug overdose decedents in 2020 differed from prior years. Poles, Potlatching, and Public Affairs: The Use of Aboriginal Culture in Development
In the summer of 1987 the Tsimshians of the village of Kitsumkalum in northwestern British Columbia raised three totem poles, a massive undertaking that enabled them to demonstrate the strength of their community and the political potency of their leaders to mobilize support for their goals. Today, aboriginal culture is being used as a resource to devise creative strategies for asserting or negotiating a social and political status quo . The pole…
Seroprevalence of Sars-CoV-2 Antibodies in Rhode Island From a Statewide Random Sample
Objectives. To characterize statewide seroprevalence and point prevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in Rhode Island. Methods. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of randomly selected households across Rhode Island in May 2020. Antibody-based and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)–based tests for SARS-CoV-2 were offered. Hispanics/Latinos and African Americans/Blacks were oversampled to ensure adequate represen…
History of Methadone and Buprenorphine Opioid Agonist Therapy Among People Who Died of an Accidental Opioid-Involved Overdose: Rhode Island, January 1, 2018–June 30, 2020
To guide intervention efforts, we identified the proportion of individuals previously engaged in opioid agonist therapy among people who died of an accidental opioid-involved overdose. Most individuals (60.9%) had never received any prior buprenorphine or methadone treatment. Individuals who died of an overdose in 2020 had a similar demographic profile and treatment history compared with prior years. To prevent additional accidental opioid-involv…
Emergency Department and Hospital Care for Opioid Use Disorder: Implementation of Statewide Standards in Rhode Island, 2017–2018
In March 2017, Rhode Island released treatment standards for care of adult patients with opioid use disorder. These standards prescribe three levels of hospital and emergency department treatment and prevention of opioid use disorder and opioid overdose and mechanisms for referral to treatment and epidemiological surveillance. By June 2018, all Rhode Island licensed acute care facilities had implemented policies meeting the standards’ requirement…
Queering methodologies and organizational research: Disrupting, critiquing, and exploring
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the methodological implications of queering organizational research. The author examines three related questions: what does queering organizational research entail?; how have organizational scholars queered research to date?; and how does queering organizational research and methodologies advance our understandings of organizing processes? Design/methodology/approach The paper begins with an overvie…
Organizational Communication Meets Queer Theory: Theorizing Relations of “Difference” Differently
In this essay, I show how further engagement with queer theory can contribute to organizational communication theorizing about difference. After reviewing the theoretical roots of difference and intersectionality research in organizational communication, I draw from queer theory to articulate three guiding principles for queer difference research: (a) emphasizing the notion of normativity; (b) adopting an anticategorical approach to difference, i…
Occupational Segregation Research: Queering the Conversation
Scholars of gender, work, and organization have long been concerned with developing explanations to occupational segregation; that is, the segregation of work by socially significant forms of difference such as sex and race. In this article, I argue that extant occupational segregation research is limited by its reliance upon binary thinking, as well as its neglect of forms of difference other than sex and race. In order to rethink this line of r…
Us foreigners: Intersectionality in a Scientific Organization
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore intersectionality as accomplished in interaction, and particularly national difference as a component of intersectionality. Design/methodology/approach – The authors use ethnographic, shadowing methods to examine intersectionality in-depth and developed vignettes to illuminate the experience of intersectionality. Findings – National difference mitigated the common assumption in scientific work tha…
Conforming to and Resisting Dominant Gender Norms: How Male and Female Nursing Students Do and Undo Gender
Much existing research has shown that men are able to construct and enact masculine identities in female-dominated occupational contexts. However, few studies have examined the experiences of both men and women in these occupations. Furthermore, few studies attend to how men and women in these occupations both conform to and resist gender norms. In this study, I draw on the undoing gender frameworks developed by Deutsch and Butler to address the …

Exercising Agency in an International Socioscientific Controversy: The Use of Human and Material Agents to Assert Canada’s Sovereignty in the Arctic
What determines a nation’s sovereignty over a particular territory? This question is now the subject of a heated debate on the international political scene, with global warming having rendered previously unreachable Arctic resources accessible to the five countries that have territorial claims in the far North: Canada, the United States, Russia, Denmark, and Norway. By building on the concepts of human and material agency, I demonstrate how both…
The Neoliberal Project and Governmentality in Rural Mexico: Emergent Farmer Organization in the Michoacán Highlands
This article explores the neoliberal project in the context of Mexico's new agrarian reform and the disjuncture between neoliberal ideals and on-the-ground reality. This is examined through the case of small-scale dairy farmers in northwestern Michoacán as they struggle to understand their relationship with a medium-scale dairy processor who is urging them to organize in the name of quality. This activity is consistent with the position of the ne…

Privatizing the Private Family Farmer: Nafta and the Transformation of the Mexican Dairy Sector
This article explores a much neglected class of rural producers in Mexico, commercial family farmers, whose position in a globalizing political economy is treated as either unproblematic or ignored altogether in the agrarian literature. I contend that these small-scale capitalist farmers, as well as their peasant and ejidal counterparts, are being privatized under Mexico's new neoliberal agricultural policies, culminating with the passage and imp…
Social Change and the Creation of Underdevelopment: A Northwest Coast case
The situation of many aboriginal peoples in Canada manifests similarities to the dependency exhibited in the underdeveloped world. This article examines changing relations of production, to outline the evolution of the articulation of a northwest coast Tsimshian community with the world economy. The Tsimshians participated in several relations of production, including those represented by various circuits of capital, to develop the Tsimshian econ…

Playing Safe: Helping Rates for a Dropped Mitten and a Box of Condoms
In a Canadian shopping centre, a mitten or a box of condoms was accidentally dropped in front of 80 individual members of the public. The dropper was helped to retrieve his object by 43% of 30 people who saw the mitten but only by 17% of 30 people who saw the condoms. This replicates Edwards' 1975 report that the rate of helping was lower for an embarrassing than for a neutral object

Principal Influences on the Music of the Lilly Brothers of Clear Creek, West Virginia
MUSICAL GROUPS SUCH AS the Lilly Brothers obviously have many external and internal forces acting on them that account for the music they play at any particular moment. Choice of material and style are the result of the meshing of these forces. Personal relationships, aspirations, cultural context, physical conditions, and economic conditions all contribute, and none can be meaningfully studied in isolation without a general understanding of the …
