  • Dating stone arrangements using luminescence

    J K Feathers, Stephen Aaberg et al.•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 38

Luminescence dating of rocks and sediments associated with various anthropogenic rock arrangements has the potential to provide age information for these hard-to-date features. This study applies infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) to sediments under rocks and to the rocks themselves from tipi rings and other features from the northern Plains. Dates are provided for 27 sediment and 5 rock samples from 7 archaeological sites in Montana, North …

  • Sacred Sites, Sacred Places

David L Carmichael, Jane Hubert et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Sacred Sites, Sacred Places•2013

Sacred Sites, Sacred Places explores the concept of 'sacred' and what it means and implies to people in differing cultures. It looks at why people regard some parts of the land as special and why this ascription remains constant in some cultures and changes in others. Archaeologists, legislators and those involved in heritage management sometimes encounter conflict with local populations over sacred sites. With the aid of over 70 illustrations th…

  • The Concept of an Altithermal Cultural Hiatus in Northern Plains Prehistory

    Open Access•Brian Reeves•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1973•Cited by: 18•References: 58

The concept of a cultural hiatus, when it is believed the Northern Plains was essentially abandoned by prehistoric bison-hunting cultures because of extremely adverse climatic conditions in the interval 5500-3000 B.C. has become generally entrenched in archaeological thought and literature. However consideration of the current palynological data and climatic models indicate that a grassland environment which supported a viable bison population ex…
