Social Integration and Diurnal Cortisol Decline: The Role of Psychosocial and Behavioral Pathways
OBJECTIVE: A growing number of studies have associated various measures of social integration, the diversity of social roles in which one participates, with alterations in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) functioning. The pathways through which social integration may be linked to HPA functioning, however, are as yet unknown. The present study examined whether daily social interactions, affective responses, health behaviors, and persona…
Effects of climatically shifting species distributions on biocultural relationships
Local and Indigenous Peoples play critical roles in safeguarding global biological and cultural diversity. However, species distribution modelling has yet to incorporate perspectives that assess threats to the linked biological and cultural systems of local and Indigenous Peoples. Here, we provide the first example of integrating species distribution modelling with benefit‐relevant indicators. This novel approach assesses how human access to cult…

The Process of Deculturation: Its Dynamics among United States Aged
Through a process of conscious as well as unconscious conditioning the older American is gradually groomed for total cultural withdrawal. The dynamics of this process in many ways replicate- in reverse-the enculturative process of early childhood. Culture lag in adaptation to a changing life cycle has facilitated the cultureless position of the old. When you think about old age-and it is a subject studiously avoided
Adaptive Aspects of Culture Shock
This paper considers some reactions of a small group (fifteen) of American scholars to a summer of work in India. Dream and memory materials gathered during a three-month period suggest the repression of certain kinds of symbolic links to American culture. Highly affective imagery is displaced by forms of cultural identification that do not threaten the individual's capacity to adapt to a traumatic cultural confrontation
