    James A Wilson, R S Weiner et al.•ARTICLE•KIVA•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 26

A total of 200,000+ large timbers were transported >75 km to Chaco Canyon, a political and religious center in the precontact U.S. Southwest, using only human power. Previous researchers reported that typical primary roof beams (vigas) of Chacoan Great Houses averaged 0.22 m in diameter and 5 m in length with a mass of 275 kg. However, the 275 kg mass appears to be a miscalculation. Here, we calculate that a ponderosa pine timber of the stated di…

  • Matching Social and Ecological Systems in Complex Ocean Fisheries

    Open Access•James A Wilson•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2006•Cited by: 4

This paper considers ocean fisheries as complex adaptive systems and addresses the question of how human institutions might be best matched to their structure and function. Ocean ecosystems operate at multiple scales, but the management of fisheries tends to be aimed at a single species considered at a single broad scale. The paper argues that this mismatch of ecological and management scale makes it difficult to address the fine-scale aspects of…

  • The Intercohort Decline in Verbal Ability: Does it Exist

    James A Wilson, Walter R Gove•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1999•Cited by: 31•References: 22

Has there been a long-term intercohort decline in verbal ability beginning in the early part of this century? Recent analyses by Alwin and Glenn using data from the General Social Survey (GSS) strongly support such a trend. This decline, however, is not consistent with a substantial literature on adult cognitive development. We argue that Alwin's and Glenn's analyses confuse cohort effects with aging effects, apparently because of (1) a reliance …

Drawing on a diverse literature, we explain how criminal behavior is maintained through a process of nonsocial reinforcement, and show that some persons find criminal behavior particularly rewarding. Results suggest that the experience of committing nonviolent and, parti…

  • Order out of Chaos: The Case for Parametric Fisheries Management

    Open Access•James Acheson, James M Acheson et al.•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1996•Cited by: 46•References: 39

SThe current crisis in the world's fisheries indicates the need for a different management method than that now used by Western scientists, which regulates the quantity of fish taken. The authors propose a method called parametric management, which takes into account the complex, chaotic nature offish stocks and emphasizes preserving regular biological processes in the life cycle of fish by controlling how people fish. Supporting data come from 2…

  • Leisure Patterns Among Four-Day Workers

Joseph Seltzer, Joseph L Seltzer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•1980•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The four-day work week and other forms of rearranged and flexible schedules change the flow and pattern of a person's work and leisure. This reshaping of the experience of leisure time was investigated for people who are currently working on a four-day, forty hour schedule by asking them how they used their time. Five dimensions of leisure time usage emerged from a factor-analytic technique and were analyzed to determine how individual difference…
