  • Culture and History in the Pacific

Open Access•Jukka Siikala•BOOK•Culture and History in the Pacific•2021•Cited by: 48

Culture and History in the Pacific is a collection of essays originally published in 1990. The texts explore from different perspectives the question of culture as a repository of historical information. They also address broader questions of anthropological writing at the time, such as the relationship between anthropologists’ representations and local conceptions. This republication aims to make the book accessible to a wider audience, and in t…

  • Hierarchy and power in the Pacific

    Open Access•Jukka Siikala•ARTICLE•Anthropological Theory•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 11

Looking at recent turmoil in political processes in the Pacific, the article discusses the relationship of socio-cosmic holism and hierarchy in Tonga, Samoa and Fiji to western ideologies of democracy and individualism. Incorporation of traditional chieftainship into colonial and postcolonial state structures has had different outcomes in each case. The structural arrangements, which according to Dumont are seen as intermediary forms, are looked …

  • Hierarchy and hybridity

    Open Access•J Robbins, Jukka Siikala•ARTICLE•Anthropological Theory•2014•Cited by: 15

In this introductory essay to the special issue 'Dumont, Values, and Contemporary Cultural Change' we argue that Dumont should be seen as an important theorist of contemporary process of cultural interaction and transformation. Although Dumont is rarely read as a scholar of the kinds of cultural changes scholars have over the last two decades tended to examine under the rubric of globalization, his extensive studies of the interaction of individu…

  • The Ethnography of Finland

    Jukka Siikala•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Anthropology•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 21

Different national traditions define disciplines in different ways, and ethnology, folklore, and anthropology are separated in the Finnish university system. The great divide between the more universally oriented anthropological research and the local, especially Eastern and Northern European ethnological traditions is sometimes conceptualized by defining the latter as nationalist. The emergence of Finnish and Finno-Ugric studies in Finland compl…

  • Theories and Ideologies in Anthropology

    Open Access•Jukka Siikala•ARTICLE•Social Analysis•2004

It has been claimed that anthropology is in a terminal decline. If so, according to my interpretation, part of this is self-generated. The intellectual suicide of the discipline is closely connected to the decline of serious ethnographic research. The classic backbone of the discipline has been called ‘salvage-ethnography.’ This critical concept implies that ethnography has interest only in the past or faraway places, and this kind of ethnography…

  • Chiefs and Impossible States

    Jukka Siikala•ARTICLE•Communal/Plural Journal of…•2001

The challenges of different forms of ethnonationalism and the simultaneous legitimation crisis of the politics of existing nation-states have revealed the difficulties the social sciences face in rethinking some of their basic concepts. With the accelerating globalisation of the economy, there has been a basic change in the state - society relationship and the role the state plays in controlling people's lives. The Pacific micro-states provide il…
