    Open Access•Keith Parry, Katy Parry•ARTICLE•International Affairs•2022

As the visual turn in politics and International Relations becomes more established, scholars are enriching the subfield with specialized studies in the forms of political and legal work undertaken by key institutions (see e.g. Mary Angela Bock's Seeing justice: witnessing, crime, and punishment in visual media, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2021). Sandra Ristovska's new book examines how human rights organizations and collectives are becoming…

  • Images of liberation? Visual framing, humanitarianism and British press photography during the 2003 Iraq invasion

    Open Access•Keith Parry, Katy Parry•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2011

Although the 2003 Iraq invasion was not wholly framed as a ‘humanitarian intervention’, the rhetoric of bringing liberation, democratization and human rights to the Iraqi people was widely advanced by the coalition and supporters as a legitimating reason for war. This article assesses the role played by press photography in legitimizing or challenging this crucial framing during the invasion across a range of UK national newspapers. Privileging v…

In this article, we explore the relative cogency of these theoretical positions in the context of British media coverage of the 2003 Iraq War. We find that coverage generally conformed to the elite-driven model, reinforcing the coalition. Nevertheless, our analysis …
