  • Institutionalization and Alternative Futures

    Jon Hendricks•BOOK•Institutionalization and…•2019

No one wants to put an aging relative in a home. But very few people have an understanding of the issues involved and options available for an older person who needs outside care. This important book offers a variety of new insights into ways of maximizing choice, independence, and well-being, and minimizing the emotional stunting often associated with institutionalization. Both imaginative institutional programs and such alternatives as communit…

  • Handbook of Asian Aging

Hyunsook Yoon, Jon Hendricks•BOOK•Handbook of Asian Aging•2018

In western countries, the rising tide of population aging took 100 years to alter the face of societies, but Asia is experiencing comparable changes in not much more than a quarter of a century. Open Access•Jon Hendricks, Jason L Powell et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009•References: 11

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contextualise the need for a social theory of ageing. For a long time, social gerontology has been accused of being “data rich but theory poor”. The paper reviews this and maps out the importance of research themes of social theory and sets the scene for the articles that have used social theory in an innovative way to shed light on international experiences of ageing. Design/methodology/approach The paper …

  • Leisure, Aging and

    Open Access•Jon Hendricks•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2007•Cited by: 1

Leisure and well‐being are closely entwined throughout life. Whether defined as free time or volitional activity, the significance of leisure is that it provides opportunities wherein the quest for meaning is self‐absorbing and yields subjectively salutary results. Given changes in the character of work, certainty of careers, timing of retirement, and improvements in health, it is reasonable to assert that leisure will occupy an important place i…

Stephen J Cutler, Jon Hendricks et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2003•Cited by: 5

The lower rates of home computer availability and use exhibited by older persons may be accounted for to some extent by compositional characteristics negatively associated with availability and, to a lesser extent, use of computers, although unmeasured attitudes, experience, and support undoubtedly play a role

Leisure research among the elderly has not kept pace with its significance in their lives. While the centrality of work is often discussed, a comparable role for leisure is seldom acknowledged. Through a blending of life-course and structural-level perspectives this paper discusses the need for conceptual innovation in leisure research. Contradictory findings have been reported about depression in the elderly living in metropolitan and nonmetropolitan regions of the United States. Additionally, the extent to which the same sets of variables are predictive of depression among the elderly living in metropolitan and nonmetropolitan environments is unknown. We examined these issues using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES‐D) and a national sample of elderly r…

Because involvement in specific organizations typically is part of a general pattern of social participation, understanding the effects of activity in a particular realm is difficult. A 1985 program designed to make the skills of retired professionals available to public service agencies provided an opportunity to follow volunteers during various stages of their participation. It also permitted an assessment of the impact of their volunteer work …

  • The Ideal Type and Sociological Theory

    Open Access•Jon Hendricks, Calvin B Peters et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1973•Cited by: 6•References: 9

Though widely used in the literature of sociology ideal types have received little systematic explication. One of the difficulties is the ambiguity surrounding the usage of types as theoretical or definitional statements. Beginning with the types constructed by Weber and his contemporaries the discussion proceeds by analyzing subsequent revisions as they relate to the subject matter of the social sciences. Suggestions for improving the explanator…

  • An Alternative Perspective on Retirement a Dual Economic Approach

    Open Access•Jon Hendricks, Cathy E McAllister•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•1983•Cited by: 3•References: 19

A structural model for examining retirement is presented in the context of a political economy of ageing. Contemporary capitalist economies may be conceived of in terms of macro-level organisation which results in a monopolistic core and competitive peripheral sectors. In turn this configuration serves to colour individual life-experience. Data on differential worker- and work-related characteristics are presented as a means of explicating the ne…

  • Defining the Situation: Reflection of Life Styles in Funeral Eulogies

    Open Access•Jon Hendricks, Carol D Hendricks•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•1973

The nature of funeral orations was analyzed. Based on participant observation of over 100 funeral services in central Pennsylvania the nature of the variables which condition eulogies was assessed and two orientations outlined. For those individuals who were seen as the victims of life or who lacked an element of control over their own life-situation, death was treated as a release, which enabled them to realize their true potential. For the grou…

    Jon Hendricks, Jon A Hendricks et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Spectrum•1982•References: 8

The German Enlightenment has been ignored in accounts of the origins of sociological theory. The works of Leibniz, Lessing, and Herder contain a number of ideas that influenced the intellectual climate in which later German social thought took shape. We discuss several of these ideas in some detail and suggest some of their influences in the works of Marx, Weber, and Simmel. The major portion of the paper is devoted to the exposition of the incip…

  • The Elderly in Society: Beyond Modernization

    Open Access•Jon Hendricks•ARTICLE•Social Science History•1982•References: 20

Modernization theory provides a successful conceptual model in gerontology for two reasons. First, and most obviously, it establishes an integrative framework for those who focus on cross-cultural and historical patterns of aging in comparative contexts. In addition, together with the age-stratification model (Riley, Johnson, and Foner, 1972), it has fostered a movement away from an emphasis on individualistic, psychological explanations of adjus…
