  • Teacher positioning within the figured world(s) of urban school science

    Open Access•Katherine Wade-Jaimes, Rachel Askew•ARTICLE•Science Education•2024

Although research has highlighted the challenges of teaching in urban settings, particularly for science teachers, it has paid less attention to the development of science teaching identities in urban settings. This paper situates science teaching identity within societal discourses of science, education, and teaching to explore the ways in which macro‐level discourses influence the positions available to science teachers in urban schools. Using …

  • Designing to support equity-as-transformation perspectives for multilingual science learners

    Open Access•Ashlyn Pierson, D Teo Keifert et al.•ARTICLE•Instructional Science•2024

In this paper, we examine how researchers and teachers in a multi-year professional development program shifted their conceptualizations of equity. Following (Grapin et al (2023) Sci Educ 107:999–1032), we ground our analysis in two conceptualizations of equity that exist across fields: equity-as-access (learners should have access to disciplinary knowledge, practices, and career paths) and equity-as-transformation (learners should transform what…

  • Political iconoclasm

    Rachel Askew, Rachel M C Askew•ARTICLE•Post-Medieval Archaeology•2016•References: 11

The mid 17th century in the British Isles was dominated by a period of political and religious turmoil known as the English Civil Wars. The two sides, Royalist and Parliamentarian, became associated with very different forms of Christianity, with the latter being identified with Puritanism, an extremely austere religion whose supporters became associated with iconoclasm. However, this paper explores the motivations for the damage caused at the Bi…

  • Biography and Memory

    Open Access•Rachel Askew•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 3

The post-medieval castle is often neglected in English archaeology, with most analyses focusing on whether the castle was built for status or defence, a debate which has become known as ‘the Battle for Bodiam’. However, in the English Civil War between 1642 and 1651, many castles were fortified either for King Charles I or his rebellious Parliament. Although the fortification of castles during this period is often attributed to acts of desperatio…

  • Race, Ethnicity, and Wage Inequality Among Women

    Open Access•I Browne, Rachel Askew•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2005•Cited by: 11•References: 7

This article examines trends in Black-White and Latina-White wage inequality among women from 1989 to 2003. Building on Bound and Dresser's conclusion that the Black-White earnings gap widened in the 1980s, the authors find that in the 1990s and early 21st century, the Black-White earnings differential remained fairly constant and that education plays a pivotal role in the Latina-White earnings gap. In every year, Latinas show larger wage differe…
