Preschool Duration, Family Background and Long‐Term Outcomes: Evidence From the Expansion of École Maternelle in France
This paper analyses the long‐term effects of preschool education in France. We focus on the effect of preschool duration on educational attainment and labour market earnings in adulthood. Building on an old tradition of free and universal pre‐primary education, France implemented in the late 1960s a large‐scale expansion of preschooling facilities, leading to a massive increase in the supply of preschool. We rely on the independent variation acro…

Robust Inequality of Opportunity Comparisons: Theory and Application to Early Childhood Policy Evaluation
This paper develops a criterion to assess equalization of opportunity that is consistent with theoretical views of equality of opportunity. We characterize inequality of opportunity as a situation where some groups in society enjoy an illegitimate advantage. In this context, equalization of opportunity requires that the extent of the illegitimate advantage enjoyed by the privileged groups falls. Robustness requires that this judgment be supported…
Intergenerational Earnings Persistence and Economic Inequality in the Long Run: Evidence from French Cohorts, 1931–75
This paper analyses long‐term trends in intergenerational earnings persistence in France for male cohorts born between 1931 and 1975. This time period has witnessed important changes in the French labour market and educational system, in particular an important compression of earnings differentials as well as a large expansion in access to secondary and higher education. Using a two‐sample instrumental variables approach, I estimate two measures …

Intergenerational earnings mobility in Japan among sons and daughters: Levels and trends
Chapter 6 Measuring Circumstances: Francs or Ranks, does it Matter
Purpose – We analyze equality of opportunity for earnings acquisition in France between 1973 and 1993 defining individual circumstances by parental earnings. We compare two different definitions of circumstances. In the first one they are measured by the father's earnings level, in the second one by the father's rank in the earnings distribution.Methodology – First we use stochastic dominance tools. Then we decompose the evolution of inequality o…
Unequal Opportunities and Ethnic Origin: The Labor Market Outcomes of Second-Generation Immigrants in France
This article makes two contributions to the empirical analysis of the socioeconomic achievement of ethnic minorities. The first contribution is methodological. The author relies on a discussion of the concept of equality of opportunity to analyze how the disadvantage suffered by ethnic minorities should be defined and empirically measured. The second contribution is empirical. The author estimates the disadvantage suffered by second-generation im…
Equality of opportunity and luck: Definitions and testable conditions, with an application to income in France
Inequality of Opportunities vs. Inequality of Outcomes: Are Western Societies All Alike
This paper analyzes the relationship between income inequality and inequality of opportunities for income acquisition in nine developed countries during the 1990s. Equality of opportunity is defined as the situation where income distributions conditional on social origin cannot be ranked according to stochastic dominance criteria. We measure social origin by parental education and occupation and use the database built by Roemer et al. (2003 ). St…
